Clingendael Academy organised its first-ever training on the nexus between climate change and conflict resolution. This was done in partnership with the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and ๐ฑโฎ๏ธ
The training took place in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Participants developed their skills in conflict analysis, using negotiations for conflict resolution, designing project activities from a do-no-harm approach, and storytelling for effectively communicating climate data.
The Academy looks forward to expand this line of work, as the interrelated effects of , conflict, and inequality demand a response in many of the contexts it works in.

Clingendael Academy teamed up with International Centre for Peace, Human Rights and Development - IPHRD Africa to organise two back-to-back trainings for young peacemakers from the Horn of Africa โฎ
Ambitious individuals from Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya came together in Nairobi for a packed programme of experience-based learning.
Over intense days, the refresher training sharpened their conflict resolution abilities, equipping them to be effective change agents in their own communities. Through immersive simulations and role plays, participants delved into the intricacies of negotiation and mediation, gaining invaluable experience in real-world scenarios.
The next week, a select group of participants started a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT). This advanced programme equipped them with the technical know-how to design, develop and implement their own training initiatives.
The trainers-to-be designed creative curricula that tackled vital topics such as trauma and mental health, UNSCR 2250, 2419, and 2535, conflict analysis, storytelling, and negotiation and mediation techniques.
They practiced with using a combination of simulations, exercises, and role plays in their curricula, allowing them to build a solid foundation for their future training endeavours.
We look forward to following and supporting their progress as they implement their trainings and continue to play important roles in conflict resolution and peacebuilding in their communities.

Ukrainian officials trained at Clingendael
On the morning of the 16th of May, Clingendael Academy received a group of high-level officials from Ukraine. They are involved in negotiations and coordination of some of the most important legislative areas for Ukraineโs harmonisation of EU laws, including energy, agriculture, transport and digital affairs.
In two days, Clingendael guided the participants towards a comprehensive understanding of what EU accession entails.
They were brought up to speed on the fine prints of EU enlargement by professor Antoaneta Dimitrova. Previous EU-accession negotiators Milica Delevic from Serbia, and Marko Mrdak, Montenegro, shared their extensive experience.
Clingendael Director Monika Sie welcomed the participants, trainers Teun Janssen and Christiaan Nelisse discussed the political context and negotiation dynamics for Ukraineโs road to EU membership.
The second half of the training will take place in June, where the participants will acquire practical skills through an EU accession simulation, a session on EU interest representation for third countries, and a networking event with representatives of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The participants were actively engaged and highly motivated to work hard for an ambitious path towards European Union membership. Clingendael noticed their professionalism and awareness of political and technical trends.
This training was commissioned by the Ukrainian Diplomatic Academy and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Desnoods geven we ze de Krim. Als je ruzie met iemand hebt, moet je het toch een keer bijleggen.โโ
๐ฌ Monika Sie, Clingendael-directeur : "Eerst keken veel mensen met een culturele bril naar Rusland, nu doen ze dat door een geopolitieยญke bril."

The 2011 revolution in Tunisia, and the regime that preceded it, had negatively shaped relationships between citizens and state security forces.
As a response, the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP initiated a system of Local Security Committees: a form of community policing that brings together security forces, local and national authorities, and civil society, with the aim of bridging the gap between security actors and the civilian population.
Last month Clingendael Academy provided a three-day negotiation training to Tunisian Local Security Committee members from Ben Guerdane and Zarzis, in collaboration with the UNDP.
