Another week’s excursion has been completed with the professional guidance of Exp-trek. At the end of July, Walk in Greece explored one more mountainous region in Greece: EVRYTANIA! While the rest of Greece was baking in 40°C, we were enjoying walks along the rivers, standing under waterfalls, or trekking under the protection of dense woods from village to village.

Though this was my second visit in the area, I still struggle to grasp how vast it is. The vegetation never seizes to amaze me. The area was still blooming as if it was spring.

Our accommodation was also a real highlight of the trip. Just outside of the village Krikello, we stayed in a private wooden cabin that also has a tree house adjacent to it that could house two brave souls. Any pictures posted on Instagram of the tree house were a crowd favorite. The wooden cabin, on the other hand, reminded us of the Little House on the Prairie.

Visiting the gorge “Panta Vrechi” (which stands for ‘the place that is always raining’ in Greek) is a must when you are in the area. But you better take a 4x4 car, because the roads are challenging. Upon arrival in the gorge by car, we walked about 40 minutes in the river before we reached a place with abundant water falls. That’s the moment we understood the origin of the name. The place had a fairytale appeal.

On our way to the village Epiniana, located in Agrafa Evrytanias, we visited the deserted but highly historical village Old Viniani. We were glad to hear that some people are trying to revive the place by renovating the beautiful houses. We hope the next time we pass by the village, we will get to see more houses restored to their old beauty.

The word Agrafa means unwritten in Greek. This is a range of mountains that were difficult for intruders to enter, which meant that the locals were able to live as free people during different occupations. The path from Epiniana that connects with the Asprorema Canyon is easy to walk as it is mostly in the shadow.

Protomagia in Greece

For many countries, May 1st is International Labor Day. This is also a national holiday in Greece, though it is more commonly called "Protomagia.

Many people traditionally go to the countryside for a picnic, to fly kites and gather wildflowers for a flower wreath called "Stefania" that people hang on the front doors of their houses to welcome spring. It is also the date for locals to attempt the first swim of the season.
