Karate Was More Than Kata — Behind Every Form Was a Fighting Application

When Gichin Funakoshi brought Okinawan karate to mainland Japan in 1922, he introduced more than a collection of movements. He worked to systematize karate’s techniques, training methods and philosophy, and his teaching placed great importance on disciplined practice and kata. Funakoshi later wrote extensively about karate, including Karate-do Kyohan, which became an important source for the system he taught.

For the traditional karate practitioner, kata was not simply something to perform for appearance. The movements represented techniques and principles that could be studied through partner practice and application. However, historical accuracy matters here: Funakoshi himself did not embrace modern free-sparring competition. According to the Japan Karate Association's historical account, his teaching emphasized kata, while younger university students later pushed for more forms of kumite.

This is why understanding bunkai and application gives greater meaning to kata. A block, strike, turn or change of direction was not necessarily intended as an empty movement; it could represent a response to an attack, control of an opponent, or another practical principle. Later Shotokan development increasingly emphasized the relationship between kihon, kata and kumite, but the three should be understood as connected aspects of training rather than completely separate practices.

Funakoshi's greater contribution was to transform karate from an Okinawan martial tradition into karate-do, a disciplined path of physical training and personal development. He continued teaching in Japan until his death in 1957, leaving behind a karate tradition that would eventually spread throughout the world.

“Kata was never meant to be empty movement; behind the form was a lesson, and behind the lesson was the martial art.”
