One of the horses here is impossible to catch when on pasture due to traumatic experience. He needs to be caught by Friday, - how do we solve it?

I try the approach and retreat method to gain this horse’s trust.

When he walks, I walk; when he stops, I stop. I gradually approach him, and when he allows me to touch him, I back away as a reward.

This teaches him that letting me approach makes me go away, building trust without forcing anything.

So that I’m eventually able to put the halter on by Friday

Despite being on diet pasture for 2 months this horse is still a bit chubby. Could this be the reason why?

I’ve found that using grazing breaks strategically reduces anxiety, barn sourness, rushing and separation anxiety

But I don’t think grazing alone solves any of it in a lasting and reliable way

It’s more something we can use strategically to shape behaviour

Just like treats isn’t going to teach a horse to trailer load it however doesn’t hurt to give them some food when inside the trailer

When multiple things work together and not against each other we get faster and more lasting results

I have a theory about why they tend spook here.. And it’s not ghosts 👻

It’s because we are renovating the place and therefore there’s always something new, which makes them alert

And just as the horses are at their most alertest they see their own refection in the windows which also are new

Nevertheless, we do a bend to drop to empty worry, dismount and let them graze

It seems to make them more comfortable here and in time they might associate the northern farm with peace and relaxation
