Next Level Pietro

Along the trail, I am taking opportunities to improve my photography skills. When I am carrying a camera, I tend to look at the world more carefully, trying to find subjects and angles: I find it makes me more mindful and present.

After Jiri Bazar, the next village we will stay at is Shivalaya - at the entrance of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. We will enter the national park briefly, then continue on the trail towards Pikey Peak 4'061m, our target for this trek!

Lungo il percorso, colgo ogni occasione per migliorare le mie capacità fotografiche. Quando ho una macchina fotografica con me, tendo a osservare il mondo con più attenzione, cercando soggetti e angolazioni: trovo che mi renda più consapevole e presente.

Dopo Jiri Bazar, il prossimo villaggio in cui soggiorneremo è Shivalaya, all'ingresso dell'Area di Conservazione di Gaurishankar. Entreremo brevemente nel parco nazionale, per poi proseguire sul sentiero verso Pikey Peak (4.061 m), la nostra meta di questo trekking!

While trekking in the hills of Nepal, there is always something to see. As we pass village after village, the mountains begin to show in the distance. The weather has been cloudy and somewhat rainy, so the snowy peaks are not yet revealing themselfs - but the environment is absolutely amazing!

Prayer flags are dancing in the wind in every house. Most of the population here is buddhist and has close ties with their Tibetan neighbours across the mountains.

Pikey Peak is not yet in sight. In the meanwhile, we are climbing and descending hill after hill - an amazing but quite phisically intense experience!

Durante il trekking tra le colline del Nepal, c'è sempre qualcosa di nuovo da vedere. Superando un villaggio dopo l'altro, le montagne iniziano a stagliarsi all'orizzonte. Il tempo è stato nuvoloso e un po' piovoso, quindi le cime innevate non si sono ancora rivelate, ma il paesaggio è assolutamente mozzafiato!

Le bandiere di preghiera sventolano al vento in ogni casa. La maggior parte della popolazione è buddista e ha stretti legami con i vicini tibetani al di là delle montagne.

Il Pikey Peak non è ancora in vista. Nel frattempo, continuiamo a salire e scendere collina dopo collina: un'esperienza incredibile ma fisicamente molto impegnativa!

The spring season is an amazing time to visit Nepal! Flowers are blooming every which way and the weather is perfect for trekking.

These photos are taken at approximately 2'000m of altitude: you can see how the vegetation is lush and green, it feels like walking trough the garden of Eden. In the Alps, at the same altitude, we would already be above the tree line and we would be surrounded by grassland and maybe even snow depending on the season!

This incredible difference in climate, flora and also fauna is one of the most common misconception people have about Nepal: they compare the altitude with experiences in their own country, and imagine that the environment here must be glacial, or desertic.

In fact, the tree line in Nepal is between 3'500m and 4'000m - below this, we find jungle, life, and amazing locally grown fresh food!

La primavera è un periodo fantastico per visitare il Nepal! I fiori sbocciano ovunque e il clima è perfetto per il trekking.

Queste foto sono state scattate a circa 2.000 metri di altitudine: si può notare come la vegetazione sia rigogliosa e verde, sembra di camminare nel Giardino dell'Eden. Sulle Alpi, alla stessa altitudine, saremmo già al di sopra del limite della vegetazione arborea e circondati da praterie e forse anche neve, a seconda della stagione!

Questa incredibile differenza di clima, flora e fauna è uno dei più comuni fraintendimenti che le persone hanno sul Nepal: confrontano l'altitudine con le esperienze nel proprio paese e immaginano che l'ambiente qui debba essere glaciale o desertico.

This is Jiri Bazar, in the Solukumbhu district of Nepal. Before the famous Lukla airport was built, it was from here that the expeditions for Everest began: in the green hills, far away from snowy summits, with still approximtely 160km to walk before even reaching Base Camp!

Jiri is a historical place. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were here to start their faithful expedition to the top of the world in 1953, along with hundreds of men, horses and mules. It must have been quite a sight to observe the huge convoy slowly making it's way trough the hills!

Today, Jiri is a very pleasant village at the footstep of the mountains. We will start our trek to Pikey Peak from here!

Questo è Jiri Bazar, nel distretto di Solukumbhu, in Nepal. Prima della costruzione del famoso aeroporto di Lukla, era da qui che partivano le spedizioni per l'Everest: tra le verdi colline, lontano dalle cime innevate, con ancora circa 160 km da percorrere prima di raggiungere il Campo Base!

Jiri è un luogo storico. Sir Edmund Hillary e Tenzing Norgay partirono da qui per iniziare la loro audace spedizione verso la vetta del mondo nel 1953, insieme a centinaia di uomini, cavalli e muli. Dev'essere stato uno spettacolo impressionante osservare l'enorme convoglio che si faceva strada lentamente tra le colline!

Oggi, Jiri è un piacevole villaggio ai piedi delle montagne. Da qui inizieremo il nostro trekking verso Pikey Peak!

Back to Nepal! It is spring time and the hills are blooming with rhododendron flowers.

This adventure is in Solukhumbu, the Everest region of Nepal - however, it is not one of the most walked paths.

Two available spots for Mera Peak 6'476m, Nepal, starting October 11 2026!

Mera is the tallest trekking peak of Nepal. No technical skills are required to reach the summit. This is why Mera is the ideal mountain for climbers looking to push their experience at altitude. The route includes glacier crossing and climbers will be part of rope teams with crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe.

The altitude is an extreme challenge. Good phisical condition and high altitude equipment are required. There will be possibility to rent high altitude gear at base camp.

Il Mera Peak è la vetta più alta del Nepal raggiungibile con un trekking. Non sono richieste competenze tecniche per raggiungere la cima. Per questo motivo, il Mera Peak è la montagna ideale per gli alpinisti che desiderano mettere alla prova la propria esperienza in alta quota. Il percorso prevede l'attraversamento di un ghiacciaio e gli alpinisti saranno accompagnati da cordate dotate di ramponi, imbracatura, casco e piccozza.

L'altitudine rappresenta una sfida estrema. Sono necessarie una buona condizione fisica e attrezzatura specifica per l'alta quota. Sarà possibile noleggiare l'attrezzatura al campo base.

I had the pleasure to meet at the airport before leaving Argentina! Nims is arguably the greatest mountaineer alive, holding the record for most 8'000m+ ascents (49 at end of 2025 and still counting, a mind boggling feat), the first winter ascent of K2 and the fastest to summit all 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen.

His 14 peaks documentary, aired on Netflix in 2021, also played a role in the development of my life in the mountains. As a european and trekker in the Alps, the film first opened my eyes to the giants of the Himalaya - and sparked a thirst to see, if not to climb, all of them.

He and his team climbed Aconcagua on the same day I did, on 29 Jan, and we crossed path near the summit. It was great to share the slopes with such a legend!

Ho avuto il piacere di incontrare all'aeroporto prima di lasciare l'Argentina! Nims è probabilmente il più grande alpinista vivente, detentore del record per il maggior numero di ascensioni di vette oltre gli 8000 metri (49 alla fine del 2025 e il conteggio è ancora in corso, un'impresa sbalorditiva), della prima ascensione invernale del K2 e del record per aver raggiunto la vetta di tutte le 14 cime senza ossigeno supplementare.

Il suo documentario sulle 14 cime, uscito su Netflix nel 2021, ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo della mia vita in montagna. Da europeo e appassionato di trekking sulle Alpi, il film mi ha aperto gli occhi sui giganti dell'Himalaya e ha acceso in me il desiderio di vederli, se non di scalarli, tutti.

Lui e la sua squadra hanno scalato l'Aconcagua lo stesso giorno in cui l'ho fatto io, il 29 gennaio, e ci siamo incrociati vicino alla vetta. È stato fantastico condividere le pendici con una tale leggenda!

This is the end of the Aconcagua coverage! The tallest mountain in the Americas, one of the Seven Summits, and my highest point so far. Although Aconcagua is not a technical mountain, the altitude is extreme and it is not a climb for beginners.

If you have some experience at altitude and are looking to add an iconic peak to your belt, Aconcagua is a milestone in any climbing career. Just below 7'000m of altitude, it is the perfect bridge to test your metal before deciding wether you are ready to go higher.

Questo è tutto per quanto riguarda l'Aconcagua! La montagna più alta delle Americhe, una delle Sette Vette e la mia vetta più alta finora. Sebbene l'Aconcagua non sia una montagna tecnicamente impegnativa, l'altitudine è estrema e non è una scalata adatta ai principianti.

Se avete già esperienza in quota e desiderate aggiungere una vetta iconica al vostro palmarès, l'Aconcagua è una tappa fondamentale nella carriera di qualsiasi alpinista. Con i suoi quasi 7.000 metri di altitudine, è il ponte perfetto per mettere alla prova la vostra resistenza prima di decidere se siete pronti a salire ancora più in alto.

The last sunset on Aconcagua, from Camp 2 Nido De Condores, at an altitude of 5'400m. After 10h of ascent and 5h of descent to reach the summit (6'961m) and back, I am spent. Nonetheless, I have enough energy to melt some snow on my gas stove and make a noodle soup - only to find myself unable to eat. I completely lost my apetite, even the smell of the soup is repulsive to me. This is what altitude can do to your body!

Still, after forcing myself to at least drink the liquid part of the stew, the sleeping bag felt like heaven and it was the best sleep I had in the mountain. During the night, anything outside the sleeping bag froze, as usual at this altitude. Nonetheless, my morale was to the sky: I have done it, and tomorrow I will head down to the safety and comfort of Base Camp!

L'ultimo tramonto sull'Aconcagua, dal Campo 2 Nido De Condores, a un'altitudine di 5.400 m. Dopo 10 ore di salita e 5 di discesa per raggiungere la vetta (6.961 m) e tornare indietro, sono esausto. Ciononostante, ho ancora abbastanza energia per sciogliere un po' di neve sul mio fornello a gas e preparare una zuppa di noodles, solo per scoprire di non riuscire a mangiare. Ho perso completamente l'appetito, persino l'odore della zuppa mi fa schifo. Ecco cosa può fare l'altitudine al corpo!

Eppure, dopo essermi sforzato di bere almeno la parte liquida della zuppa, il sacco a pelo mi è sembrato un paradiso ed è stata la migliore dormita che abbia fatto in montagna. Durante la notte, tutto ciò che era fuori dal sacco a pelo si è congelato, come al solito a questa altitudine. Nonostante tutto, il mio morale era alto: ce l'ho fatta, e domani scenderò verso la sicurezza e il comfort del Campo Base!
