7 days after the flood in Nepal, this is my understanding of what happenend in the Rasuwa valley of Langtang National park. All photos were taken before the disaster.

North-East of the Nepal-Tibet border of Rasuwa, on the Chinese side of the Langtang Lirung Himal (7'200m), a massive piece of glacier fell over 1'300 vertical metres into the valley below, from 5'100m to 3'800m of altitude, gaining monstrous amounts of momentum and kinetic energy. From that moment, the fate of the villages downstream were sealed and the wave was unstoppable.

The ice and rock landslide was fueled by a high altutude lake, adding millions of litres of water to the rolling wave. I have read unconfirmed reports that the lake is still partially blocked and presents the danger of a second wave which may be released in the coming days.

After encountering the lake, the wave reached the Nepal-TIbet border. Here it split, climbing over 3km North uphill towards Tibet while most of the flood descended South downhill along the Trishuli river and towards Nepal, further gaining momentum, mass and debris.

As a result of the wave, the border police building between Nepal and Tibet has been razed, 7 hydroelectric power plants and their dams were damaged (2 completely deleted, rappresenting approx 10% of the electricity production of Nepal), all bridges in the Rasuwa valley are gone, dozens of villages have been severely hit, over 1'000 people are confirmed casualties and 4'000 more are missing.

Langtang Syaprubesi village before the flood. I have stayed here 8 times in the last three years. Now the teahouse that hosted us is gone, along with most of the village.

I will not post images after the flood, because a sufficient amount of horror is circulating in the net already. I do not wish to add more. My deepest condoleances to all involved.

I personally feel a gash in my hearth, for it is here in Langtang that I took the decision to make the mountains a prominent part of my life.

I take this opportunity to communicate that no group from Next Level Adventures Pvt.Ltd was involved in the accident.

Il villaggio di Syaprubesi, nel Langtang, prima dell'alluvione. Vi ho soggiornato otto volte negli ultimi tre anni. Ora la locanda che ci ospitava non esiste più, così come gran parte del villaggio.

Non pubblicherò immagini successive all'alluvione, poiché in rete circola già abbastanza orrore; non voglio aggiungerne altro. Le mie più sentite condoglianze a tutte le persone coinvolte.

Personalmente sento una ferita profonda nel cuore: è proprio qui, nel Langtang, che ho deciso di rendere la montagna una parte fondamentale della mia vita.

Colgo l'occasione per comunicare che nessun gruppo della Next Level Adventures Pvt. Ltd è rimasto coinvolto nell'incidente.

It is time to say good bye to the Dolomites! This pre-historic reef, World Unesco Heritage Site, may very well be the most beautiful segment of the European Alps.

It has been a privilege to walk among these peaks, and even to reach a summit here!

È arrivato il momento di salutare le Dolomiti! Questa antica barriera corallina, Patrimonio dell'Umanità UNESCO, è forse il tratto più spettacolare delle Alpi europee.

È stato un privilegio camminare tra queste vette e persino raggiungerne una!

This is a marmot! They live in holes in the ground, a little bit like hobbits, and they are well adapted to the mountain conditions.

Marmots are mammals that hybernate, which means they stay in their den throughout winter and most of the cold months in a sleep-like state, before waking up again when spring arrives.

It is usually easier to hear them, rather than see them, because their characteristic whistle can be heard from a long distance and they are a rather shy animal. But this one came straight out of it's home into the lens of my camera!

Questa è una marmotta! Vivono in tane sotterranee, un po' come gli hobbit, e sono perfettamente adattate alla vita in montagna.

Le marmotte sono mammiferi che vanno in letargo: ciò significa che trascorrono l'inverno e gran parte dei mesi freddi nella loro tana, in uno stato simile al sonno, per poi risvegliarsi all'arrivo della primavera.

Di solito è più facile sentirle che vederle, poiché il loro caratteristico fischio si ode anche a grande distanza e sono animali piuttosto timidi. Ma questa è uscita direttamente dalla sua tana finendo proprio davanti all'obiettivo della mia fotocamera!

The traverse to get back to the roadside is absolutely amazing! Luckily, the weather holds and we avoid the rain entirely

Our mascotte is a little Chihuahua named Pippo. He also came with us to the hut, but preferred not to climb the Sasso Piatto summit!

La traversata per tornare sulla strada è assolutamente incredibile! Per fortuna il tempo regge e riusciamo a evitare completamente la pioggia.

La nostra mascotte è un piccolo Chihuahua di nome Pippo. È venuto con noi anche al rifugio, ma ha preferito non scalare il Sasso Piatto!

From the summit, the Marmolada glacier is perfectly framed between cloud and stone.

We have feathered companions up here, black birds just enjoying the views and waiting for our departure to get the crumbs from our sandwitches. With the storm incoming, their color begins to match the sky: it is time to go down!

Dalla cima, il ghiacciaio della Marmolada si staglia perfettamente incorniciato tra nuvole e roccia.

Lassù abbiamo dei compagni pennuti, dei merli che si godono il panorama e aspettano la nostra partenza per rubare le briciole dai nostri panini. Con l'arrivo della tempesta, il loro colore inizia a mimetizzarsi con il cielo: è ora di scendere!

Summit of Sasso Piatto 2'964m in the Dolomites! The weather is turning and a chilly wind is picking up. The views are all around us!

The summit is a stretched long rocky ridge, opening up the entire west side of the Dolomites: this is an accessible summit in the Alps, requiring some wayfinding and scrambling skills!

A Via Ferrata is also available to reach the summit. Steep and well equipped, it offers a technical option in this amazing terrain

Cima del Sasso Piatto (2964 m) nelle Dolomiti! Il tempo sta cambiando e si alza un vento gelido. Il panorama è mozzafiato!

La vetta è una lunga cresta rocciosa che si estende fino a noi, aprendo una vista panoramica sull'intero versante occidentale delle Dolomiti: una cima accessibile nelle Alpi, che richiede buone capacità di orientamento e di arrampicata!

È disponibile anche una Via Ferrata per raggiungere la vetta. Ripida e ben attrezzata, offre un'opzione tecnica in questo terreno spettacolare.

Gaining some altitude on the Sasso Piatto (2'964m) of the Dolomites! now the grassland gave way to a gray and dishomogenous rock.

The climb is mostly scrambling and it is marked by red and white signs - for now the weather holds, but if thick fog rolls up I am worried about finding the way back.

We continue carefully up, as most of the sky is still clear. The valleys below us open up nicely. Next update from the summit!

Stiamo guadagnando quota sul Sasso Piatto (2964 m) delle Dolomiti! Ora il prato lascia il posto a una roccia grigia e disomogenea.

La salita è per lo più di arrampicata ed è segnalata da cartelli rossi e bianchi. Per ora il tempo regge, ma se dovesse arrivare una f***a nebbia temo di non riuscire a ritrovare la via del ritorno.

Proseguiamo con cautela, dato che la maggior parte del cielo è ancora sereno. Le valli sottostanti si aprono in un panorama suggestivo. Prossimo aggiornamento dalla vetta!

This is Sasso Piatto 2960m! It looks like an unapproachable rock wall, but taken step by step, it is a scrambling walk up to the summit.

I will climb with Sandro, who is hosting us in their lodge in Soraga, Dolomites! Sasso Piatto literally means "flat rock" in italian, but this doesnt look flat at all to me!

Questo è il Sasso Piatto, 2960 m! Sembra una parete rocciosa inaccessibile, ma, salita passo dopo passo, si tratta di una faticosa arrampicata fino alla vetta.

Scalerò con Sandro, che ci ospiterà nel suo rifugio a Soraga, nelle Dolomiti! Sasso Piatto significa letteralmente "roccia piatta" in italiano, ma a me non sembra affatto piatta!

The approach to Sasso Piatto in the Dolomites is absolutely stunning. After reaching a car parking at around 1'400m, we walk a long traverse across green fields. The vertical stone walls of the Dolomites are all around us.

The Marmolada glacier is also in view, the tallest peak of the region! Stay tuned for photos of Sasso Piatto in the next post!

L'avvicinamento al Sasso Piatto, nelle Dolomiti, è assolutamente mozzafiato. Dopo aver raggiunto un parcheggio a circa 1400 metri di altitudine, si percorre un lungo sentiero attraverso verdi prati. Le pareti rocciose verticali delle Dolomiti ci circondano da ogni lato.

Si scorge anche il ghiacciaio della Marmolada, la vetta più alta della regione! Restate sintonizzati per le foto del Sasso Piatto nel prossimo post!
