With a clutch win over Kateryna Lagno in Round 14, Vaishali has punched her ticket to the World Championship match.

Vaishali's performance throughout the 13 rounds (standing at 7.5/13 before the final surge) showed incredible resilience. Facing some of the strongest minds in the world—including Goryachkina, Tan Zhongyi, and Anna Muzychuk—she maintained a performance rating of 2586, proving she belongs at the very top of the hierarchy.

Vaishali Rameshbabu has delivered a stunning victory against Aleksandra Goryachkina in Round 11 of the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates. In a tense tactical battle, Vaishali capitalised on a critical error to trap White's rook, forcing a resignation and cementing her status as the tournament’s most clinical finisher.

With this win, Vaishali has surged into sole first place with 7/11 points, holding a commanding full-point lead over the field. After an incredible comeback run—scoring 5 points in her last 6 games—she is now the firm favorite to win the event in Cyprus and claim her spot in the World Championship match.

The momentum is historic. As the tournament enters its final rounds, all eyes are on Vaishali to see if she can maintain this legendary form and bring the title home to India.

Nihana Shrestha Wins Silver Medal in International Chess

Nepal’s rising chess player Nihana Shrestha successfully won a silver medal for Nepal in the individual fourth board category, scoring 5.5 points from 7 games.

She registered impressive victories against players from Australia, India, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, and Singapore, while drawing against China and suffering her only loss against Pakistan, which helped her secure the silver medal for the nation.

Under the FIDE World School Team Chess Championship – Asian Continental Stage, the Nepali team delivered a mixed performance in the international competition.

In the eight-round team event held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Nepali team scored 7 points, achieving three wins, one draw, and four losses.

Representing Nepal were last edition’s national champions from Marvelous English Boarding School: Brijanandan Das, Kristi Rijal, Aakash Sharan Kunwar, Nihana Shrestha, and Suhani Singh.
