A world champion called Hikaru Nakamura a cheater with nothing but a win streak as evidence.

Vladimir Kramnik, world champion from 2000 to 2007, pointed at a run of roughly 45 wins out of 46 games in Nakamura's online history and called the probability too low to be legitimate.

Chess.com ran nearly 2,000 individual reports on Nakamura's games. Found no incidents of cheating.

They ran simulations on the exact win streak Kramnik flagged. Consulted outside statisticians, including a professor at a top university.

Their conclusion: out of someone who has played over 50,000 games, a streak like that wasn't unusual at all. It was just a legitimate hot run.

Chess.com said Kramnik's accusation lacked statistical merit.

Nakamura's own response was blunt. He said Kramnik's math didn't hold up.

This wasn't the only player Kramnik went after either. He leveled the same kind of accusation at other grandmasters, based on similar reasoning, with the same lack of proof behind it.

A former world champion's name used to mean instant credibility.

Sometimes even a legend's word isn't enough when the numbers don't back it up.
