Subash finishes 23rd at Asian Games

KATHMANDU, October 3: Nepali professional golfer Subash Tamang finished 23rd at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after playing a two-over 72 in the final round at Kasugai Country Club in Aichi, Japan on Saturday.

Subash finished with an even-par 280 total, becoming the second Nepali golfer to make the cut at the Asian Games and the first one to complete all four rounds. Sukra Bahadur Rai had made the cut at the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago but he withdrew due to injury.

Subash started the final round strongly, carding 1-under 34 on the front nine. He opened with a birdie on the first hole and added another on the seventh before dropping a shot on the ninth. However, the back nine proved costly as he shot a 3-over 38. He bogeyed the 13th but immediately responded with a birdie on the 14th. Another bogey on the 17th was followed by a double bogey on the 18th, leaving him at 2-over for the round and 23rd overall.

Subash opened the tournament with an even-par 70 before producing his best round of the week, a 3-under 67, in the second round. He followed that with a 1-over 71 in the third round to enter the final day at two-under.

Another Nepali golfer, Rahul Bishwakarma, missed the cut after shooting 76 in both of the first two rounds, while amateur Sadbhav Acharya withdrew from the tournament on medical grounds. Tara Karki Chitrakar also missed the cut in the women’s event.

South Korea’s Joohyung Kim won the men’s individual gold medal with an impressive 18-under 262. Japan’s Kazuki Higa took silver and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana bronze after the two finished tied with China’s Wenyi Ding at 15-under 265 and settled the medals through a playoff. Wei-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei finished fifth at 11-under, while India’s Veer Ahlawat and Saptak Talwar shared eighth at nine-under 271.

In the women’s event, India’s Pranavi Sarath Urs won gold with a 15-under 265 total. China’s Ruoning Yin took silver after a playoff, while Singapore’s Shannon Xuan Yin Tan won bronze, with both finishing at 14-under 266.

China won the men’s team gold, followed by Korea and Japan, while China, India and Chinese Taipei took the top three places respectively in the women’s team event.

Subash Tamang stays in top 15 after third round at Asian Games

Nayoga, October 2: Nepali professional golfer Subash Tamang carded a one-over 71 in the third round to stay inside the top 15 in the men’s individual golf competition at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan on Friday.

Subash, who had opened the tournament with an even-par 70 before firing a three-under 67 in the second round, finished the third round with a three-round total of two-under 208. He is currently tied for 14th position heading into Saturday’s final round.

Starting from the 10th hole, Subash made a bogey on the 11th before responding with a birdie on the 13th. He dropped another shot on the 15th but immediately recovered with a birdie on the 16th to complete the back nine in an even-par 35.

The front nine also produced a mixed outing. Subash opened with a birdie on the first hole but gave the shot back with a bogey on the second. Another bogey on the sixth left him one-over for the side, and he finished the front nine at 36.

Overall, Subash made three birdies and four bogeys during the round.

South Korea’s Kim Joo-hyung leads the competition, with Subash 10 strokes behind the leader. The final round will be played on Saturday.

Subash moves up to 11th place at Asian Games

KATHMANDU, October 1: Nepali professional golfer Subash Tamang carded an impressive 3-under 67 in the second round to climb to 11th position at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games at Kasugai Country Club in Nagoya on Thursday.

Subash, who opened his campaign with an even-par 70, posted a 3-under 137 total over 36 holes to make the cut and advance to the final two rounds. With the achievement, Subash became only the second Nepali golfer to make the cut at the Asian Games, following Sukra Bahadur Rai, who achieved the feat at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou three years ago.

Starting from the 10th tee, Subash made a flying start with a birdie on the 10th hole and added another on the 13th. He dropped a shot on the 15th but quickly recovered with a birdie on the 17th to make the turn in two-under 33.

After the turn, Subash added three more birdies on his way to a one-under 34 back-nine score. He began the latter half with a bogey on the first hole but responded with a birdie on the second. After saving pars on the third and fourth, he dropped another shot on the fifth before finishing strongly with birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. The 13th South Asian Games double gold medallist finished the round at 3-under 67, putting himself in contention with two rounds remaining.

Meanwhile, amateur Rahul Bishwakarma missed the cut after carding a second successive 6-over 76 for a 12-over 152 total. Starting from the 10th tee, Rahul turned in 1-over 36 after making a birdie on the 13th but dropping shots on the 12th and 17th holes. He struggled on the latter half, carding 5-over 40 after a double bogey on the fifth and bogeys on the third, fifth and sixth holes. Cut fell at 5-over 145 and 38 players made it to the final two rounds.

Another Nepali amateur, Sadbhav Acharya, withdrew from the tournament on medical grounds.

At the top of the men’s leaderboard, Chinese Taipei’s Wei-hsuan Wang and China’s Wenyi Ding share the lead at 9-under 131. Wang carded a 4-under 66, while Ding fired a 6-under 64. Japan’s Kazuki Higa and Keita Nakamija are tied for third at 8-under 132, while South Korea’s Doyeob Mun and Joohyung Kim share fifth place at 7-under 133.

In the women’s event, Tara Karki Chitrakar was in 42nd position at 45-over 185 after carding a 24-over 94 in the second round. She missed the cut, which fell at 6-over 146, with a total of 27 golfers making it to the final two rounds.

Singapore’s Shannon Xuan Yin Tan leads the women’s competition at 13-under 127 after shooting a 6-under 64. India’s Pranavi Sharath Urs is second at 11-under 129 after firing a 7-under 63, while China’s Ruoning Yin and the Philippines’ Rianne Mikaela Malixi share third at 7-under 133.

Subash Shares 18th position After Opening Round at Asian Games

KATHMANDU, September 30: Nepali professional golfer Subash Tamang finished the opening round of the men’s golf competition at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with an even-par 70 to share 18th position at the East Course of Kasugai Country Club on Wednesday.

Subash played an even-par 35 on both the front and back nine. He opened with a bogey on the second hole before recovering with a birdie on the ninth to make the turn at level par. He made a strong start to the back nine with consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and added another birdie on the 14th. However, a double bogey on the 15th and a bogey on the 18th saw him drop three strokes over the final four holes.

Amateur Rahul Bishwakarma played 6-over 76 to share 43rd place. He made the turn at 2-over 37 before finishing the back nine in 4-over 39. Bishwakarma suffered a double bogey on the 15th and dropped shots on the 16th and 17th holes. Nepal’s Sadbhav Acharya withdrew from the competition. He was hospitalised on Tuesday after complaining of fever and has yet to be discharged.

Chinese Taipei’s Wei-hsuan Wang and Japan’s Kazuki Higa share the men’s lead at 5-under 65. India’s Saptak Talwar, South Korea’s Doyeob Mun, China’s Yunhe Zheng and Japan’s Keita Nakajima are tied for third at 4-under 66.

In the women’s competition, Nepal’s Tara Karki Chitrakar carded a 21-over 91 to share 43rd place with Mongolia’s Telmen Khasar. Tara endured three triple bogeys, a double bogey and 10 bogeys, while saving par on four holes.

Singapore’s Shannon Xuan Yin Tan leads the women’s field after firing a 7-under 63. India’s Pranavi Sharath Urs is second at 4-under 66, while Bianca Isabel Pagdanganan, Wei-ling Hsu, Ruoning Yin and Arpichaya Yubol share third at 3-under 67.
