THE RIVER REMEMBERS

A MESSAGE FROM HILL KIT 🇳🇵

The Nepal floods are a reminder that we must understand and respect our rivers, especially in the fragile Himalayan region.
In 2004, I travelled through the Himalayas and walked approximately 50–80 km along Himalayan rivers. I spoke with local people and asked why so few homes were built close to the river.
Their answer stayed with me:
They understood the river.
They knew that heavy rainfall, snowmelt, landslides and sudden mountain events could dramatically change river flow.
Today, many homes, shops, roads and infrastructure are being built much closer to rivers and natural waterways.
But there is an important lesson for Nepal—and for river communities around the world:
THE RIVER DOES NOT FORGET ITS PATH.
A river that looks peaceful today can become dangerous during extreme rainfall or other natural events.
Before building near a river, we should consider:
• Historical flood levels
• Natural floodplains
• River channels and drainage
• Mountain and landslide risks
• Local terrain and geography
• Official flood-risk maps and scientific studies
There is no single safe distance that applies to every river.
GIVE THE RIVER SPACE.
We cannot control the mountains.
We cannot control the rain.
We cannot command the river.
BUT WE CAN CHOOSE WHERE WE BUILD.
This is not only about the Nepal flood crisis.
It is a message for India, Nepal, Tibet and river communities across the world.
