I like this approach. It seems to me martial artists (in general) tend to start "self defencing" from the physical contact stage, rather than starting the discussion a little earlier than that.

Ashburton Aikido
In the club we learn to move in a safe way around others.
It is a vague statement, but Aikido is a complex discipline, involving elements of practical martial arts and mastery of movements based on the philosophy of looking after yourself and others.

This is a good way to approach Aikido. He has some great sound bites. A dual practice where there is forms and motion that encourage softness and strong shapes, and robust, all purpose techniques that work for most situations.

I remember reading passage so long ago the source is gone. In it, the author suggested that one should take up a religion that would help balance a person's innate personality.
So you should be a Christian if you are inherently lethargic, because Christianity encourages actively doing good works. Or you should be a Taoist if you are too controling, because they think you should interfere in the world as little as possible. I remember the idea, not the specifics - don't hang me if you are Christian, (and I know the Toaists out there won't anyway).
Aikido, I think, does something like this. Folk who defer to others tend to get let others decide what will happen in life (walked over?). Bossy people tend to muscle through a situation - mentally or physically (usually at some cost to others and themselves). Aikido provide balance to both extremes.
One cannot use another's energy if you muscling them, physically, emotionally, or mentally. And being timid mean often missing out on good things when others make inconsiderate decisions. Aikido requires you take the initiative, and that you are relaxed and not fighting the partner's motion.
Aikido requires you tone down the muscle and turn up the initiative. That is not a bad thing in today's society, I think.
Congratulations to Emma for getting her Blue belt!! Whoop whoop
There is this magnificent thing about Aikido that is hard to capture in a sentence. I will try in a couple of paragraphs.
I was watching us train this evening, and there were men and woman all interacting - working on a purpose. In the technique we were doing there is wrist grabbing and pushing to get others on the ground, but both people in the pair are helping each other. They had a common goal.
People get to interact without all the posturing and fake small talk that comes with meeting someone for the first time. You train with someone and then train with someone else a little while later.
Its like being at a party and the host rushes over, grabs two people and exclaims quick, I need a couple of dish washers. Suddenly you both have a purpose, and the process of learning about the other person happens organically. And, if you like them, you keep talking. If you don't you don't, and noone is offended if you walk away. Dishwashing is a great way to meet people.
In this world of division, training brings people together, briefly, with a common goal. You learn how to talk to people you don't know, how to help others, and accept help.
And all this when you are supposed to be learning to fight. Aikido is truly a wonder.

I liked a quote the other day.
“That’s what I admire about Aikido- it challenges the human impetuous desire to beat the bits out of another human. It restrains this desire and puts us up against ourselves. In Aikido, the only enemy is in the mirror.
Aikido just IS. I don’t know if there’s a specific reason why it is here. I can say that it’s ideal for adults. And it’s ideal for adults who want to do martial arts because: they are over and done with violent atmospheres; they don’t need the heavy physical activity of a traditional martial arts class; Aikido gives the fulfillment of participating in Martial Arts without the things that take their toll on the body— kicking, punching or getting kicked or getting punched.”
