Auckland Seido Karate Club Auckland Seido Karate Club is a full-time karate dojo with over 20 different classes per week. Karate is not about who can kick the highest or win a fight.

Our goal is to help students achieve more for themselves by building confidence, self-discipline, physical fitness and camaraderie in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Instead Karate encourages individuals to strive to do their best and to challenge beyond their own perceived limitations. Seido Karate is structured and supervised to ensure that students are training in a safe and constructive environment. Seido Karate was founded in 1976 by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura (a 9th degree black belt). Nakamura started the World Seido Karate Organisation to develop individuals to improving themselves and the world around them. Seido (which translates to ‘sincere way’) focuses on the principles of love, respect and obedience. Seido Karate has been operating in the Auckland region for over 20 years with clubs in Devonport and Morningside.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved Shuseki Shihan Danny.

“A mighty tōtara has fallen.”
Kua hinga te tōtara o Te Waonui a Tāne.

For many years, Shuseki was a source of strength, support and inspiration to countless individuals and to our Auckland Seido Karate whānau.

His wisdom, teachings and guidance, together with his kindness, aroha, spirit and wonderful sense of humour, touched the lives of so many. His legacy will live on through everyone he taught, supported and inspired.

He will be deeply missed and remembered always with love, gratitude and the utmost respect.

Osu, Shuseki Shihan Danny ❤️🥋

Auckland Seido Karate Club Camp October 2026

This year’s annual camp brought together two important themes: Gassho 合掌 & FUN!

Theme One: Gassho 合掌 reverence & gratitude

Unity of Opposites: Pressing the left hand (representing human self-centeredness or ego) and the right hand (representing enlightenment or wisdom) together shows that these opposites are not separate.

Interconnectedness: It acknowledges that your life is supported by countless conditions, people, and kindnesses

Not a Demand for Positivity: In Buddhist practice, gratitude through Gassho is not forced "positive thinking," but a clear, quiet seeing of what sustains you in the present moment.

Theme Two: Fun! - For those that missed out, the annual Auckland Seido Karate Club Quiz (minus the Pub) hosted by the incomparable Kyoshi Julie was another roaring FUN success. The most popular round being "Name the Black Belt" - which felt like a personal attack to be honest (Editor's Edit: this copy was supplied by Senpai Viv) Sunday morning brought the FUN games pitting karateka against karateka, black belts vs kyu grades, adults vs children in a fight to the death (or the most points). Who knew that Tic-Tac-Toe could become a competitive death match and that getting a golf ball into a metal pot could cause so much controversy.

Big thanks to Shuseki Shihan Mike for joining us, leading so many classes and sharing his birthday pushups with us! Happy 71 years young Shuseki Shihan! Osu!

Osu! Auckland Seido Karate Club held its September general grading on Saturday. The dojo was full of strong spirit, loud kiai, and everyone rising to the challenge. Always a pleasure to have karateka from our Whangārei Seido whānau join us. Thanks to Jun Shihan Ed who led a challenging, memorable (and at times muddy) grading. Congratulations to Joel, Thomas, Ollie and Aidan for grading to first kyu. The Shihans are proud of everyone who stepped onto the dojo floor and earned their promotion. Congratulations! Osu.

Osu! Sei Shihan Pat, Jun Shihan Scott, Jun Shihan Lou & Jun Shihan Ed are very pleased to announce that Senpai Liam successfully graded to san dan.

(Pictured - Not Senpai Liam because senior gradings are private, but we imagine that his level of skill and resilience is much more powerful than what is depicted here, in this artist's rendition)

Six intrepid Masters graduated from our 2026 class on Sat 1 August after a grading run by Jun Shihan Ed. We are pleased to officially welcome Marion, Yaylene, Liz, Ree, Paul & Ellie to the dojo and were thrilled that every one of them turned up to the first general class on the Monday after the grading. Marion, Yay, Liz & Ree successfully graded to 9th kyu. Paul & Ellie have prior experience with Seido and have graded to 8th kyu.

Some photos (thanks Meriane) from the big day. Well done to all Masters! You are indeed never to old to be a ̶n̶i̶n̶j̶a̶ karateka.
