What’s actually the difference between a normal football and a turf football?
At first glance, they look almost identical. But if you’re regularly playing on artificial grass, the differences can make a big impact on how the ball feels and performs.
A normal football is designed primarily for natural grass. Natural grass is softer and more forgiving, so the ball doesn’t need to be built to withstand the same level of abrasion and impact.
Artificial grass is a completely different surface.
It’s harder, rougher and much more abrasive, which means a ball designed specifically for turf needs to be more durable. That’s why AG balls use tougher outer materials to handle the additional wear that comes from playing on artificial surfaces.
But durability isn’t the only difference.
The hardness of artificial grass also changes how the ball reacts when it hits the ground. A standard grass ball can bounce much more aggressively on turf because there’s less natural surface absorption. The result? A ball that can feel much harder to control.
An AG ball is designed to help dampen that bounce, giving you a more predictable, grass-like response.
Then there’s water.
A traditional football can absorb more water, which can make it heavier and change the way it feels when you’re passing, controlling and shooting. AG balls can use thermally bonded construction to help prevent water getting inside, helping the ball maintain a more consistent feel in different conditions.
So if you’re playing on artificial grass regularly, the ball you use actually matters.
Because the right ball isn’t just about how it looks.
It’s about how it performs on the surface you actually play on.
And once you understand the difference between a normal grass ball and a turf ball, you’ll never look at them the same way again. ⚽️
