After careful consideration, we have made the decision to de-affiliate from Fencing New Zealand, and the organisation has been formally informed of that decision.
This is not something we have taken lightly, nor has it been made in response to any one issue. It is something we have been considering carefully for several years. Over that time, we have experienced ongoing differences in approach, priorities, and values. Despite repeated efforts to work constructively within the system, it has become clear that our direction and that of the national body are no longer aligned.
We believe national structures should support and enable clubs and athletes. Where that relationship becomes misaligned or counterproductive, it is important to reassess how best to move forward.
Our focus has always been on athlete development, thoughtful coaching, and creating an environment where fencers can improve, explore, and perform at their best. We believe strongly in a culture that is athlete-centred, transparent, and grounded in long-term development rather than short-term outcomes or administrative process.
At this point, we feel the best way to continue that work is independently.
For our athletes, the most important thing to understand is that nothing changes. Training continues as normal, our competitive fencers will still compete under our club, and the work we do day to day remains exactly the same.
Other clubs around the country have made similar decisions in recent years for comparable reasons, and for us this is simply about remaining true to the values the club was built on.
Our focus remains exactly where it has always been: on building better fencers and a stronger club community.
