That’s round 3 of the Top Half Series done and dusted at Karting Hamilton. The weather did its part and despite forecast rain we never got a drop. As we expected, the chance to win the DD2 ticket to represent NZ at the Rotax Max World Challenge Finals in Portugal next month brought out some quality drivers we don’t usually see racing. Their combined experience in Motorsport includes multiple NZ Karting titles, racing Indy Lights and SuperKarts in the US, Formula Ford in NZ, Karts in Australia, and racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup in Asia and Australia. That’s a lot of racing experience right there - and remembering that Kane is only 16 and a couple of driver in the field have been racing since before he was born! So, to say it was going to be a tough weekend was an understatement…….

Being only Kane’s second race weekend at Hamilton, we expected he would build on his last outing in the KartStars event a few weeks ago - which he did on Saturday. He went quicker in the practice sessions and the first couple of heats than he did in the entire KartStars event - which was great! Unfortunately he couldn’t take that momentum over to Sunday - and with a couple of lower placings in the final 2 heats - he qualified for the 20 lap final in 8th place. Once again, unfortunately the final didn’t go his way either (he ended up doing a bit of ‘lawn mowing’ for the track along the main straight at one stage…..) and finished the final in 10th place - which gave him 9th overall for the weekend. Not the result we were all hoping for - but then that’s racing and the way things go sometimes.

Top Half Series-wise - despite a low finish here he has consolidated his 3rd place spot going into the final round in Auckland (his home track) in a few weeks time. A good performance at Auckland and he has a good shot at finishing on the podium in his first ever Top Half Series. However - you can never count your chickens in Motorsport - and anyone who watched Bathurst yesterday will understand that!!!!!

Thanks again to all his usual supporters who made the trek down the motorway to support him. Thanks to Karting Hamilton for putting on a great event, and all the volunteers and the Top Half Committee who put in huge hours so Kane and everyone else can go out and do these events. Lastly - thanks to Mason and Ryan for all their support and advice!

No travel for the next event! We are at the Auckland track at Colin Dale Park in Manukau on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November for the final and deciding round of the Top Half Series. See you all out there then!

Things are heating up down here in practice! The fastest out here has broken into the 37 second zone - with another two running 38.0’s! Kane finished 8th fastest in Practice 2 but lowered his PB another half a tenth! It’s tight out there - with 7 one hundredths of a second (less than the blink of an eye!) separating the best lap times from 4th to 8th!!!! Practice all over now. A bit of a rest now to regroup and get the kart ready for heat one this afternoon. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Practice for round 3 of the Top Half Series at Karting Hamilton has started. A few more entered for this round perhaps chasing the ticket to Portugal for the Rotax Max World Challenge. A good start for Kane - 4th fastest in the first practice session - but more importantly than that, he has already lowered his PB at this track by half a tenth in the first practice session on older practice tyres! That’s huge for him first up - because he has just ran quicker that he ran at the whole 2 day KartStars event here at few weeks ago (and that was on brand new race rubber!). All the track advise this morning from Mason Armstrong and Ryan Urban has clearly paid off! Looking forward to Practice 2 starting soon. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Round 3 of the Top Half Series takes place this weekend at KartSport Hamilton. Racing starts at about 1pm Saturday with the remaining races taking place on Sunday. Kane goes into this round in overall 3rd place - but it is very tight at the top with not many points separating the top 3. Anything could happen this weekend! It was also announced this week that the winner of the DD2 field this weekend will also win the ticket to represent New Zealand over in PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 next month in the finals of the Rotax Max World Challenge - so with this announcement we are expecting a lot of DD2 drivers signing up late and throwing their hat in the ring to attend this amazing event! As a result, we are imagining the driving will be even more cut throat and exciting (one way or another…..) than usual to try and bag this amazing opportunity!!!! We are aware we have some of our faithful supporters coming down on Sunday to support Kane - with the racing starting at 9am on Sunday morning. We have lots of chairs and the trailer fridge and pantry are fully stocked - so if you feel the need to take a cruise down the Southern Motorway on Sunday - you are more than welcome to drop in! We will see you all then! ❤️

That’s Kane’s 1st ever KartStars event over and done with at KartSport Hamilton. We entered as Kane hasn’t driven at this track since he was 11 in his Mini Rok kart - and he needed a chance to get to know the track before the 3rd round of the Top Half Series is there in 3 weeks time. We got down to the track late Friday afternoon, so he only managed to get on for 2 eight minute sessions before the event started on Saturday. So - with that in mind, we weren’t expecting a lot from qualifying or the weekend as a whole - we just wanted seat time at the track before the next Top Half round. He qualified 6th out of 8 DD2 karts. We did expect him to get quicker as the event went on as he got used to the cornering lines and braking points. So, starting all the 3 x 10 lap heats in 6th, he finished the 1st heat in 5th (+ 1), and then the 2nd and 3rd heats in 4th (+2). Next was the 16 lap pre-final when he had moved up the starting order to 4th. He finished 4th in that, which gave him a start from 4th in the 20 lap final. Kane was in a position to take advantage of the leaders getting into a tangle and finished in 3rd place and on the podium. It was a great result for Kane and so unexpected based on the fact that he was there to learn the track!

Kane’s Energy Corse teammate Ollie MOSEBY has to get a mention here. He drove beautifully all weekend finishing all the heats and pre-final in 3rd place. He actually lead the final race for a time and was unlucky to get tangled up with one of the other top 3 to ultimately finish in 4th. Unfortunately - that’s racing - but we all know with Ollie driving like he is that his time will come - and we all know that will be sooner rather than later.

Congratulations to all those who competed down there and to KartSport Hamilton for putting on such a great event. Thanks to all the sponsors of this event, and to all the volunteers who give up their time to make these events what they are.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who made the trip down to watch and support him. His nana Pat and granddad Clive, his nana Sylvia, his Aunty Fleur, his cousins Caitlin and Hayden, and Juanita and Kelvin who made a surprise visit Saturday afternoon.

Remember - if you can’t be here in Hamilton but you still want to watch Kane racing - KartSport NZ are live-streaming this 2 day event on their YouTube channel. Go to YouTube, type in ‘KartSport NZ’ and click on their live stream. It has a full commentary as well. Kane is first up in the track this morning at about 9.40am in qualifying. We aren’t to worried about where he qualifies today because he is still learning the track (as he hasn’t been here for 5 years and never as a senior!) and will get quicker as the weekend goes on. This is a lead in for Kane to round 4 of the Top Half series back here in 2 weeks time.

The race order and confirmed DD2 entry list is out for KartStars in Hamilton this weekend. 8 in the DD2 field (the usual suspects……) so guaranteed to have some very competitive racing. This is a warm up for Kane for round 3 of the Top Half Series in a few weeks time. Weather is looking ‘scratchy’ at the moment - but as the forecasters can’t get it right even 24 hours out we are taking it with a grain of salt at the moment - still plenty of time for it to go one way or the other…….

Kane has had to change his race number for this weekend - so he will be racing with 11 on his kart.
