On this day on 30 May 1959, Auckland Harbour Bridge opened, after 4 years of construction.

Better transport links between Auckland City and the North Shore had been needed for quite some time - in the 1950s, the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority was set up to raise funds and organise construction.

The original four lanes design proved inadequate, and in September 1969, two lanes, pre-fabricated in Japan, were added on each side, using pioneering technology.
