I was living on high alert, trying to fix everything and find all the answers, Googling and researching and lying awake at night. I stopped doing anything for myself, and I used to be really health and fitness focused, and that fell away too.

It was wanting to feel like me again that led me to health coaching, and later to mental health coaching and that's when I knew this was the work I wanted to do.

What I wish someone had told me back then is that there is another way. We don't have to wait for rock bottom, and we don't have to lose ourselves while we're trying to stay connected to our kids and support them.

If you're new here, my free guide You Are Not Broken is a good place to start, and the link is in my bio.

Everything I teach starts with what’s happening in you, not with what your child is doing, and that isn’t giving up on them. I don’t believe in standing back and hoping that watching things get worse is what helps someone. You’re still the one who’s there. It’s just that you’re the part of this you can actually work with, and when you’re scared and exhausted and carrying the second layer as well, it’s very hard to be there in the way you’d like to be. So that’s where I start.

A text comes in asking for $20 for petrol, with a promise to pay you back on Friday, and before you’ve had a chance to think your stomach has dropped and your mind is already running through every way it could go. Underneath that there’s another voice, a quieter and much harsher one, and it tells you that whatever you do you’ll probably get it wrong.

I know that voice because it was mine, and I didn’t realise I was adding to my own suffering.

If you've ever wondered why you can't switch the worry off, it's because your body thinks something is wrong, and honestly, something is. Someone you love is struggling, and a body that's been on alert for a long time is doing what bodies do. It doesn't mean you're doing something wrong, and you're allowed to be gentle with yourself about that.

If you've ever asked yourself what you're doing wrong, I wrote a free guide for that. It's in the link in my bio.

2017. Lying awake, googling, sure there was an answer I just hadn't found yet.

I was reading everything I could find, and the advice kept coming back to tough love and rock bottom and stepping back, and none of it sat right with me, and I couldn't find anything that was about staying connected to my son. So I kept searching, because it felt like if I just found the right thing I'd know what to do, and I think a lot of us do that, because we're mums and we've always been the ones who worked things out.

What I eventually noticed was how much of me had gone into the searching, and that I'd stopped doing most of the things that were mine.

If you're somewhere in that now, I just wanted you to know someone else has been up in the night too, and I'm glad you're here.

The mum who makes a small amount of space for herself - even when nothing is resolved - looks different months later.

Not because her child's situation is better. But because she is.

One of our members put it this way: "I had lost myself in all that had gone on the last few years and in the last few weeks with your lessons and reflections and meetings, I have started to find glimmers of my old self."

Glimmers. That's all it starts as. And it starts with something small - something she kept as hers, even in the middle of all of it.

If you're wondering where to begin, the free guide You Are Not Broken is exactly that beginning.

You are allowed to stop being unkind to yourself.

You didn't cause this. I know the world outside has handed you a story that implies you did - the language of enabling, codependency, tough love - and that story carries a verdict. But it isnt true. Addiction is complex
There is rarely one cause. And caring deeply about your child is not one of them.

Old me went into every conversation with an agenda - say the right thing, make him see it, find the words that finally land.

New me goes in curious.

And I can tell you - it's a completely different conversation.

The shift from persuading to getting curious is one of the things I see change everything for the mums I work with. It doesn't mean you stop caring. It doesn't mean you have no influence. It means you stop trying to drag someone toward a door they can't yet see - and you start finding out where they actually are.

One member described what this kind of shift felt like for her: "The changes have been profound. Not dramatic. Subtle. Deeply meaningful."

That's what this work looks like. Not a dramatic turnaround. A quiet, real one.

There is a version of you who moves through hard days a little differently - not because things have resolved, but because you have something to reach for when they haven't.

You have anchors, chosen by you, that help you stay steadier inside the chaos.

Not a routine. Not a checklist. Just a few small holds that matter.

One of our members, after a Dropping Anchor exercise on a coaching call, described what shifted as: "Sort of relief that my arms weren't so tired… I could focus on other things outside the immediate tension."

Room to breathe.

Not fixed. Not resolved. Just - steadier inside it.

Screenshot the slides, pick your four, and share your combo in the comments. I'd genuinely love to know which ones land for you.
