Such profound words from the BASI Foundation Rael Isacowitz about humility. I find it true in many when teaching Pilates ❤️ for myself I find that without the foundation and ‘beginner’ exercises, I can’t master the advanced repertoire. Even if we come prepared to jump into the advanced repertoire, we need to warm up and layer with foundational exercises before proceeding to advanced levels.

Wonderful thought for the day from Rael Isacowitz. Always begin with humility.

This quote is taken from his 5 minute talk “The Virtue of Humility” available on .

As International Pilates Day approaches and I think back of the journey Joe Pilates had, I find myself looking back to one of the first photos I have of myself doing the Leg Pull Front exercise on the beach. I started my Pilates career as a Mat Teacher before taking up the studies on all the Pilates equipment. I struggled to get the basics of the Mat exercises, fighting the asymmetry and imbalances I had after working at a desk all day.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to now help others! I work in a great community where people support each other, give each other space for growth and discovery, without pressure to fit into a mould, I can play with the exercises learned from my incredible mentors, to encourage the clients I see.😍
Pilates might be a skill that some have mastered, but I find it to be a lifestyle, a way to destress and a way to find symmetry when my body feels out of alignment. Cheers to Contrology and the Pilates Method!

READ MY LATEST BLOG POST! What makes a GREAT Pilates teacher?

In a world where fitness trends come and go, Pilates has held its place as a thoughtful, transformative practice. But behind every powerful Pilates experience is a skilled teacher. Someone who does far more than lead a set of exercises. A great Pilates instructor guides, observes, educates, and inspires.

When you complete your teacher training qualification it’s very much like passing your driving test. You’ll be competent but you really learn to drive once you get out on the road. It’s the same with teaching Pilates. Time and experience improve your teaching, but what skills should you focus on and what does set an exceptional teacher apart from the rest?

Let’s break down the qualities that elevate a Pilates instructor from good to truly outstanding.

Exceptional Communication Skills

If anyone asks me what my day looks like I say a talk for a living. It’s a skill I continuously work on. Before anything else, a great Pilates teacher communicates clearly, confidently, and compassionately.

They know how to:

- explain movements simply
- use language that matches the learner’s style
- give cues without over-talking
- adjust tone and phrasing for different individuals
- guide without intimidating or confusing

Communication is the foundation of safe, effective movement. A teacher who can speak in a way students truly understand sets the stage for focused, mindful, successful practice.

A Deep Understanding of Anatomy and the Pilates Principles

Pilates isn’t just about movement, it’s about intelligent movement.
Great teachers understand how the body works: joints, muscles, breath mechanics, and alignment. They know the purpose behind every exercise, helping students understand not just what they’re doing but why. A teacher doesn’t need to come up with the latest version of the original work but understand what each exercise does and how it should be executed.

This transforms Pilates from a workout into a mind-body education.

Strong Observational Skills

A skilled teacher sees the small things that make a big difference.

They notice:

- subtle alignment issues
- compensations
- imbalances
- tension or fatigue
- unsafe technique

Their ability to observe and adjust in real time is what helps students refine their practice safely and effectively. This is a skill that improves with time and practice.

Clear, Effective Cueing

Cueing is one of the most important teaching tools in Pilates.

A great instructor offers:

- specific cues that get results
- imagery that makes movement intuitive
- anatomical cues when helpful
- minimal, purposeful language
- timing that supports flow rather than interrupting it

They know exactly when to speak and when to let silence teach.

Ability to Modify for Different Bodies and Levels

No two bodies are the same, and a great instructor embraces that.

They can instantly offer:

- beginner-friendly regressions
- advanced progressions
- injury-sensitive alternatives
- personalized suggestions, even in group classes

Everyone should feel included, challenged, and safe — all at the same time. This is a key ability that separates Pilates teachers from other disciplines as ex*****on of the exercise is key, not pushing through poor technique.

Empathy, Encouragement, and Great People Skills

Pilates is deeply personal. A great teacher creates an atmosphere where students feel:

- supported
- encouraged
- comfortable
- motivated

They celebrate effort, acknowledge challenges, and make every student feel seen. Students return not just for the workout but for the connection.

Commitment to Safety and Professionalism

Safety is non-negotiable. I see too many examples on social media nowadays where safety is compromised for what’s seen as novelty and challenge. Excellent teachers:

- check form continually
- set up equipment correctly
- keep the studio organized
- protect students from pushing beyond safe limits
- stay within scope and refer out when needed

Professionalism builds trust — and trust is essential for movement instruction.

Passion for Continuous Learning

Pilates is a rich, evolving discipline. The best instructors:

- attend workshops
- study anatomy
- refine their cueing
- stay curious
- practice Pilates themselves

Their commitment to growth enhances the quality of every class they lead.

Genuine Passion for the Method

When a teacher truly loves Pilates, you can feel it.
Their enthusiasm is contagious. Their classes are inspired. Their energy lifts the room.

It’s not just instruction, it’s connection, purpose, and joy.

Final Thoughts

A truly great Pilates teacher blends knowledge, communication, sensitivity, creativity, and heart. They help students move better, feel stronger, and build confidence both inside and outside the studio.

Whether you’re searching for the right instructor or striving to become one, these qualities define excellence in the Pilates world. If you think you’ve got what it takes and would like to start your Pilates teaching journey, contact me for more information on teacher training.
