Thank you Nelson, rest easy.

🕊️ Remembering Nelson Truman

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Nelson Truman passed away peacefully this morning.

Nelson was one of those very special people who quietly gave so much to equestrian sport in New Zealand. He never needed a fuss or recognition — he simply saw what needed doing, rolled up his sleeves and got on with it.

Over the years, Nelson’s contribution has been enormous. He painted buildings at the NEC, and when Chris and Shelley first opened Woodhill Sands, Nelson was there painting the very first set of show jumping stands.

He continued to be a familiar and valued face behind the scenes, helping with the set-up for Grand Prix shows into his 80's and always willing to lend a hand.

Over the past year, Nelson took on the care of the lawns at Woodhill Sands. After the venue had been closed for eight months, it was Nelson’s countless hours on the mower that meant we were able to return to a venue looking competition-ready. Much of what riders simply arrived and enjoyed was the result of Nelson quietly working away in the background.

Show Jumping Waitemata would like to acknowledge and thank Nelson for the many, many hours of volunteering he gave to our sport and our venues over the years. People like Nelson are the backbone of equestrian sport — the quiet volunteers who don't ask for anything in return, but without whom so much simply wouldn't happen.

Our thoughts are with Nelson’s family, friends, and everyone in our equestrian community who knew him.

Today, the mower will be quiet at Woodhill Sands.

Rest peacefully, Nelson. 🕊️
Thank you for everything.
