For this year’s Steve Hodgson Memorial Tournament, we wanted to recognise and celebrate those fencers who are making their mark on the competitive scene, and hopefully give one of them a pretty spectacular boost to their fencing journey!

And thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Landsknecht Emporium, we were able to do just that. Our inaugural Emerging Fencer Award winner took home one of their beautiful Nöstalgic feders, generously donated especially for SH26! ⚔️

We’re so excited to see where your fencing journey takes you, and hope this is just the beginning of many wonderful things to come.

SH26 – What a weekend!

It’s been two weeks since the Steve Hodgson Memorial Tournament 2026, and what a fantastic weekend it was!

Two days of brilliant fencing, great sportsmanship, wonderful people and all-round good vibes. We couldn’t be happier with how it all came together! 🤺

A massive thank you to everyone who helped make SH26 such a success. To our volunteers, marshals, line judges, table keepers, gear and weapon checkers, first aiders, errand runners, and everyone who stepped in wherever an extra pair of hands was needed, we couldn’t have done it without you.

And of course, thank you to all our competitors! Whether you travelled from across the country or just down the road, you brought the energy, enthusiasm and fantastic fencing that made the weekend what it was.

It takes a whole community to put on a tournament like SH26, and we’re incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful one.

Thank you all for making it such a memorable weekend. We’re already looking forward to the next one! ⚔️💚

This 7 week course will run on Tuesday evenings 7pm - 9:30, starting October 13th.

This will provide an intro to the Sport of HEMA and a taster for some of the swords we use.

Next up in our SH26 sponsor spotlight is Yellowhammer, a small but mighty family-run HEMA business making distinctive rashguards and apparel from all over the world!

Yellowhammer combines sleekness and style with performance-oriented functionality. The result is something that we at Auckland Sword and Shield can personally vouch for!

Our Chief Instructor has been fencing in his YellowHammer rashguard for more than five years, and despite everything HEMA has thrown at it, it’s still going strong.

Save the date!

The Steve Hodgson Memorial Tournament returns this September. As New Zealand’s longest running HEMA tournament, Steve Hodgson brings together fencers from around the country for a weekend of competition, camaraderie, and (of course) fencing.
