"Veterinary physiotherapist here ☺️. Just seen a couple of posts with people using the soft rollers to lunge their horses. Just a note of caution ⚠️
These rollers do not clear the spine. In fact they have been found to show localised high peak pressure directly over where they lay (approx T11/12). These peak pressures are of similar force to those that have been found to cause back discomfort. Now not only is this detrimental to any horse, least not kissing spine candiatates. But when lunging; the very aim is to improve spinal dynamic posture which might be impeded with the lunging equipment and thus resulting in poor overall outcome. The goal is to open the back up and maybe you’re not riding to allow some strengthening without the added weight of a rider - but then the roller is creating a downward pressure which conflicts with the purpose of not riding. The solution ? Ideally lunging with no gadgets at all... and allow your horse to work on finding their own balance but if you want to long rein,
try buying a roller with padding and clearance. Or long line with a well fitting saddle, or even just padding out yourself your existing roller with sponges 🧽😄.
