Founded in 1934, our aim is to keep the tradition of recreational boating alive at Hobsonville.

Competitive sailing began at Hobsonville in the early 1930's which led to the formation of the Hobsonville Boating Club (HBC) in 1934. With the Defence amalgamation of Hobsonville and Whenuapai in 1966 to become RNZAF Base Auckland, the HBC was retitled RNZAF Base Auckland Yacht Club (RNZAF BAYC). However since the airforce base has moved from Hobsonville we are now known as The Hobsonville Yacht Club. Our aim is to keep the tradition of recreational boating alive at Hobsonville.

Roger, creator of the Wētā trimaran class, very kindly came out to HYC today to give us some advice and help to fix up this well-loved boat. ❤️

HYC members attended the opening of the Upper Waitematā Marine Centre - Te Pae ō Ōruamōkai - this morning. The lair of Mōkai, the guardian taniwha of our waters, watching over our community as we access, enjoy, and care for the upper harbour. Junior sailor Emily performed for the opening ceremony as part of the kapa haka group from local Hobsonville Point Primary School ❤️⛵️

The wait is almost over! From mid-April, Hobsonville Yacht Club will be moved in to our brand-new home at the UWMC. An exciting time for the club, with lots planned to make use of this amazing space. Now is certainly the time to get on board (pun intended).

Seasoned sailors, keen beginners, whānau looking for something to enjoy together - everyone belongs at HYC. Members will have priority access to learn-to-sail programmes, our diverse fleet and gear, a variety of learning and upskilling opportunities, and more. We prioritise safety and are keen to make our wonderful sport accessible to all.

With the move to the new Marine Centre, interest is high and spaces in our coached programmes will fill up fast. Be part of our new era ❤️⛵️

The fences are coming down at the UWMC walkway tomorrow, and our partners at Connected Neighbourhoods and the local mooring holders need some HYC muscle! 🏋

This Saturday morning, they’re moving the heavy dinghy racks to their new permanent home. These racks are no joke—they need 10-15 volunteers to get the job done.

As we prepare to move our own operations into the building next month, let’s show the community what HYC is all about and lend a hand.

📅 Saturday, 28 March
🕗8:30 AM (Should be all done in a couple of hours!)
📍 Meet at the UWMC Walkway, 43 Launch Road

⚠️ ATTENTION TENDER OWNERS: If you have a tender on the current racks, it MUST be unlocked by 8:00 AM Saturday. To ensure the move happens, any remaining locks will unfortunately have to be cut. Don't let that be you!

Want to help? Drop us a comment below or email Gavin Gunston at [email protected] to let him know you’re coming.

The fences are DOWN and the walkway is OPEN! 🥳🚶‍♂️⛵

We are stoked to announce that Level 1 of the Upper Waitematā Marine Centre has reached practical completion. HYC is officially preparing to move our maritime operations into this incredible new space at 43 Launch Road.

Here are the dates to note:

April 12th -13th : HYC maritime operations move to the new digs!
April 19th : HYC go live at UWMC! 🥂

Members, we need you! To make the move as efficient as possible we are looking for as many volunteers as we can get to help us move boats and bits! Put the weekend of the 12th -13th April in your diary to come down, help move some gear, and toast to a club milestone.

Our sailing gear is moving, but our bar stays at the current clubhouse for now. Stay tuned for updates on the big move for our social hub.

Come down, take a stroll along the walkway, and check out the new view. It's happening!

Great to see access returning to the waterfront ⛵

The coastal walkway along Boundary Road is reopening soon, marking an important step forward for the Upper Waitematā Marine Centre .

After nearly three years, this part of the coastline is accessible again, with fencing coming down and the path open to the public.

You’ll also start to see changes along the waterfront, including the relocation of dinghy storage to a new area along the walkway (end of March).

While some final works are still underway, including completion of Level 2, this is a positive step as the project nears completion.

The Marine Centre has been developed as a community-led facility, supported by HYC volunteers, and it’s great to see it beginning to open up for everyone to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing members back down on the water.
