RAYC Sailing Academy

We had a fantastic Green Fleet turnout at the Doyle Sails Summer Series this Sunday with 14 sailors out on their own course. For our Greenies club racing is the perfect training opportunity, especially as they are heading off to compete in the Sir Peter Blake Regatta next weekend. Coach Sophia and race officer/Commodore Nick Hanson took the time to go over the types of courses our sailors may be presented with at different regattas over the summer, as well as going over start sequences, flags and even syncing your race watch. All very important learnings!

Festivities will begin at 1200 with the Vice Commodore's speech and the firing of the Cannon. This will be followed promptly by the race briefing with first warning signal at 1300. Up to three races will be sailed in time for everyone to gather back on shore by 1630 hungry for burgers.

Opening day will be the first race day of the Doyle Sails Summer Series, so you do not want to miss it! Single day entries are available, but if you plan to participate this summer, grab yourself a series entry. Boats are available to hire for Green Fleet, Open Skiff, RS Feva, ILCA and RS Quest completely FREE when purchased with a series entry, and you will be allocated a boat for the entire series. These boats are going fast, however, so get in quick first in first served. For those with boats, series entry is just $100 for all eight race days. The series will be scored cumulatively and overall winners will be recognised at the RAYC Annual Prizegiving.

RAYC is proud to have six talented sailors heading to Tauranga this weekend for the annual Zespri AIMS Games! Our team—Nic Segers, Jessica Lee, Yuhan Hao, Tom Sanderson, Jackson Rumbold, and Sean Poon—have been training hard and is ready to take on the challenge.

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting a training clinic for ten budding Starling sailors here at RAYC. The three intensive days presented a variety of conditions that challenged all participants. Despite the freezing cold, our young sailors demonstrated tremendous dedication, honing their techniques under the guidance of experienced coaches. They mastered maneuvers, worked on boat speed, and perfected their starts.

Simultaneously, we held a specialist ILCA clinic for some of our top youth sailors. They maximized their time on the water with Coach Courtney, who has been doing exceptional work in elevating our ILCA sailors' skills as we head into next summer.

It's fantastic to see such a committed Starling and ILCA fleet at the club, even in the depths of winter!

During these school holidays, we partnered with the NZ RS Feva Association to host a three-day winter training clinic. Eighteen sailors from RAYC, Northcote/Birkenhead, and Kerikeri participated in the clinic, making significant strides in their racing skills as they prepare for next summer.

A huge thank you to the Feva Association for supporting the event with their class coach and treating the sailors to warm pizzas on the final day of training! It was fantastic to see sailors from different clubs connecting and building friendships throughout the clinic while honing their racing skills.

All the sailors are eagerly anticipating the next clinic, and we can't wait to welcome the Fevas back to the club again.
