💙 World Drowning Prevention Day — 25 July

Drowning is preventable, and small actions can save lives.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, water is part of our everyday life — beaches, pools, rivers, lakes, and family holidays. But water can also become dangerous very quickly. New Zealand continues to have a high fatal drowning rate compared with countries such as Australia, Canada, and the UK.

This World Drowning Prevention Day, we are supporting Going Blue for Drowning Prevention and sharing one simple message:

Float first. Breathe. Signal. Survive.

If you are ever in trouble in the water, try to stay calm, float on your back, slow your breathing, raise one arm, and call for help. Floating first gives you the best chance of survival.

If you see someone in trouble, remember: Recognise, Respond, Rescue, Revive. Call 111 and ask for Police, use flotation if available, and do not enter the water unless it is absolutely necessary and safe.

At SwimMagic Sacred Heart, we believe swimming lessons are not just about strokes — they are about confidence, safety, awareness, and building lifelong water skills.
