A tribal war nearly broke out in Auckland in the late 1800's over a packet of cigarettes? What else

Another happy punter! "This is a long overdue post to recommend Daren and Bike Auckland if you are planning a visit there. We like to start our stay in every new city with a bike tour to get the lay of the land so we know where we want to go back and explore. Our day with Daren pointed us back to some very cool neighborhoods where we found great restaurants and funky shops, and we discovered much of the history of the city, it's relationship with the native Maori people, it's volcanic past and spectacular waterfront. This is a must do if you are planning a trip to Auckland! And be sure to ask to see pictures of the new baby who was kind enough to pop out a couple of days before we got there so he was free to take us!"

This unbelievable downhill stunt will amaze you to the core - NTD.TV Either this huge rock drop-in isn’t as steep as it looks, or Kyle Mears has some incredible bike control, not to mention trustworthy tires and brakes. Hard to believe but true. In the early 1900s there were 5 trees atop "One Tree Hill", until an international Scout Jamboree hit town and some little dastardly australian scout cut one of the buggars down!!!

This picture also shows "Jacobs ladder" which was the 10the hole in the first NZ Women's Golf Open. It's the terraced area to the bottom right which takes you half way up the mountain.

Did you know a leopard escaped Auckland Zoo in 1925 ! It wasn't caught and the locals were very much on edge, until the poor buggar washed up dead at Lady's Bay St Heliers.....a month later !

Did you know when soldiers were based at Western Springs during WW2, and they had the odd small cat or dog as a pet, the odd one would go missing.

One of the soldiers one day spotted a 2 metre eel lunge at his puppy on the waters edge, half in, half out of the water!!!

Eddie the Eel was caught, and eaten on site a month later.

What don't you know about Aucklands history?
