Senior Educator with Polestar Australia since 2004, and current President of the Pilates Alliance Australasia (PAA), her work continues to shape instructors globally.

She teaches with warmth, clarity, and generosity, bringing people into the work with ease, while offering depth and intelligence.

This is the kind of learning that expands not only what we do, but how we think.

Grounded in this land.Connected through people.

Over decades we have built a strong and supportive community across Aotearoa. Faculty, mentors and practitioners who continue to guide and support one another.

Our local faculty walk alongside students throughout their learning journey, offering mentorship, guidance and experience.

At the same time, we are part of the wider Polestar global family, where knowledge continues to grow, expand and nourish our work here in Aotearoa.

Where teaching begins.

The true expression of the Pilates method starts on the Mat.

At Polestar we go beyond learning exercises.
We focus on understanding the why behind movement.

When teachers understand movement principles, teaching becomes more than cueing choreography. Movement becomes a therapeutic tool - movement as medicine, supporting whole-body health and wellbeing.

Our South Island Mat Teacher Training begins June 6–7, hosted in Christchurch and led by Senior Educator Abbey Parsons.

This training includes:
• Pre-recorded Principles of Movement lectures
• Mentoring practicums included in the course
• Support from experienced Polestar faculty
• Connection to a global community of movement educators

Because group teaching is a craft - and it begins with understanding movement.

I’ve recently begun Dr Brent Anderson’s Pathokinesiology course, deepening my understanding of where movement and pathology intersect.

Movement is recognised as a powerful therapeutic tool that can improve health outcomes across many systems of the body.

A key insight is the bidirectional relationship between movement and pathology - pathology influences how we move, and movement strategies can influence how conditions develop or resolve.

Through positive movement experiences, we support musculoskeletal, neurological and psychosocial health - and strengthen a person’s belief in their ability to move and improve.

When movement is thoughtful and purposeful, it becomes more than exercise.

Movement becomes medicine.

Day 1 Mat Series Auckland led senior Educator Emily Adams and supported by our lovely mentor Yanna.

Mat Series this weekend in Auckland.

The true expression of Pilates begins on the mat.

This is where students start to explore movement, learning to feel, experience and understand how the body moves.

Simple movements.
Clear purpose.
A deeper understanding of Pilates.

Our Mat Series is now open in Christchurch - June 6th

Our first Polestar Reformer course in Christchurch is underway⭐️

Hosted by Freedom Health and led by senior educator Abbey Parsons, supported by Mel James, this weekend is about exploring movement in the way we believe it is best learned -through experience first.

Before information, before analysis…
we feel the movement.

Our senses begin to make sense of it through the body. From there, understanding deepens.

The goal isn’t to overload with more information.
It’s to create an environment where experience leads learning.

This is where reformer teaching begins to take shape -
learning to observe movement, assess strategies, design classes, and sequence exercises with purpose.

When someone feels the difference in their body, the learning becomes meaningful.
And when cues are given with intention, change happens.

Movement has purpose.
And cues become meaningful.

Movement experience first
Understanding follows

The true expression of Pilates movement is found on the Mat.

Mat is more than teaching a sequence.

It’s watching how people move.
Noticing the small things.
How someone organises their body.
Where they hold tension.
Where movement comes more easily.

Two people can do the same exercise
and have a completely different experience.

That’s why teaching on the mat isn’t just about the exercises.
It’s about observing, adapting, and shaping the experience of movement.

Sometimes that means using props.
Sometimes it means modifying.
And sometimes it means saying less—
so the body can feel before it thinks.

The real work is helping people move
with more ease, awareness, and confidence.

Christchurch Mat Series — starting June 6th
Early Bird closes April 30th
Registrations close May 29th (to allow time for online lecture preparation)

As the year comes to a close, we want to acknowledge our incredible Polestar community - teachers, students, and Faculty across Aotearoa and beyond.

We know this week marks the end of teaching for many, and we hope the coming days offer rest, reflection, and time to simply be.

We’re deeply grateful to share this community with you, and we’re looking forward to reconnecting in 2026 with more meaningful education, collaboration, and learning - including some special international guests.

Until then, enjoy the summer 🌺
