When I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I had two choices.
Protect my egoā¦
or grow.
In boxing, Iām comfortable.
Confident.
Competent.
In BJJ, I had to become a beginner again.
That meant letting go of habits that once made me successful.
That meant tapping. A lot.
That meant saying āteach meā instead of āI know.ā
Hereās what Iāve realised:
Most people donāt struggle with learning.
They struggle with letting go of who they used to be.
Beginnerās mindset isnāt weakness.
Itās discipline.
Itās humility.
Itās long-term thinking.
So Iāll ask you the same question:
Where could a beginnerās mindset unlock new growth for you?
Let me know below š
Hey team, itās Jake here.
Today, I want to dive into the beginnerās mindset.
I had to embrace this big time when I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Coming from boxing, the first thing I had to do was remove all ego. I had to stop being Jake the boxer and step in as a white belt ā a complete beginner.
The second thing was letting go of my boxing habits. I went in with fresh eyes, ready to move differently and learn differently.
And most importantly, I stayed curious. Curious about the small details, the little techniques, and the things I didnāt understand yet.
Finally, I embraced mistakes. I knew Iād make plenty of them ā but every mistake became a teacher. Thatās where the real learning started.
So remember: let go, stay open, and lean into your mistakes ā because thatās where real growth happens.
Now Iād love to hear from you ā whatās one area of your life where you could apply a beginnerās mindset to unlock new learning? Drop a comment and letās grow together.
The jab is one of the most important punches in boxing.
They say the rear hand can take you around the block,
but a good jab can take you around the world.
Hereās a simple way to throw it clean:
-Start in a strong boxing stance.
-Extend the elbow first and keep the thumb up.
Iām exaggerating this so you can see the mechanic clearly.
-As you get close to the target, turn the fist over.
-Land the jab, then reverse every step back to guard.
This is a simple way to build a clean jab.
In part two, Iāll cover three common mistakes people make with the jab. Stay tuned for next week!
Waitangi Day.
A day to reflect, connect, and move forward.
Grateful to train alongside good people today. š³šæ
Your environment matters.
A massive part of your environment is the people you surround yourself with.
Are they actually on your team? Or are they against what youāre trying to do?
Youāll be amazed at how much having the right people around you can make a differenceāand how much the wrong people can hold you back.
Align yourself with people who want the best for you and want to see you succeed.
Game changer.
Barnyard boxing anyone? Haha throwback to 2020 boxing in my mums shed and when I could actually throw a punch with some reasonable speed!
For those who are interested the combo is this
1,2 slip 2,3 slip 3,2,3,2 12 o'clock 2,3, 2 6oclock 2,3,2,1,1,2
A total of 17 punches š

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,
I was introduced to bjj after a friend of mine mentioned it a couple times among other reasons my life has been heavily revolved around martial arts and Boxing.
A year later and it's safe say I love it. Going every chnace I get. With lots of lessons and continual struggles, and some days I have no clue what's going on haha but it's that challenge that I love!
I also love the fact that we have a solid midday crew who supports each other as much as choke each other this has been so good for me to have this community and have an outlet especially moving into fatherhood!
Hey team! Hope you've all had a great weekend!
Just sharing a short and very small snippet of some of the content I have from my boxing course. In this video I'm teaching the "2" or the rear straight!
Using the technique taught here will allow you to throw a very power and fundamentally correct rear straight.
Practice makes perfect.
Practice makes permanent.
Practice until itās natural.
We hear these sayings all the timeābut most people misunderstand them.
Perfect technique works in a perfect world.
In the real world, your opponent moves, resists, and hits back.
Practice makes permanence means drilling a movement until it happens without thinkingāno matter the situation.
Too many people try to learn more instead of mastering less.
Lock in one skill.
Make it automatic.
Then add layersālike we did in this clip.
With the new year already pumping we are gearing up again for the start of the boxing classes!
Can't wait to get back to the action with everybody.
Some good skills, speed and power from these people!

5 years and still going strong.

A bit of wisdom from Max.
There was a time I had to sit her down and be honest ā she was pushing too hard and not looking after her body.
We changed the plan.
Now sheās stronger than ever, training less, but training better.
When we train, we train hard.
And we recover even harder.
This hit home for me.
In my last fight, I was burnt out.
I hated training. I hated the clean eating.
My body was breaking down and I couldnāt get past 3 rounds without gassing or nearly blacking out.
Stepping away from what I loved wasnāt weakness ā it was the cost of ignoring my body and mental health for too long.
Finding that passion again took years.
And it started with learning how to actually take care of myself.
