Perfect morning for some open water swim coaching at Pt Chev!
As a coach I like Pt Chevalier beach in Auckland as it's normally nice and sheltered from the elements. At high tide it has a nice shallow feel for beginners to gain confidence. It's also a short beach so you can swim laps and practice sighting the entire time.
A great place to practice those open water skills!
The only caveat is that I would recommend swimming there within 1 hour either side of high tide. As it quickly becomes too shallow to swim!
Just remember to check swimsafe.org.nz before heading out.

DT Sport athletes headed out to the first race of the People's Triathlon series at Maraetai Beach.
Fiona had a great day coming away with a 6 minute PB over the Standard/Olympic distance Triathlon.
A really solid day out for James whilst practicing nutrition and pacing as he builds towards the Rotorua Suffer Half in December.
The team is looking forward to the next race in December at Mission Bay!

DT Sport athlete Jess is USA based and training for the world famous Steamboat gravel race in Steamboat, Colorado πΊπΈ
Jess is also fundraising for and doing a 5 day ride across Minnesota in support of MS.
After a solid winter of indoor training Jess is back out on the gravel bike crushing the iconic roads and hills of Boulder, Colorado.
Jess is a determined, gritty athlete and overall just a wonderful human being. We are proud to have her on the team.

Coaching Corner - Swimming
Here are a few tips to get more out of your swim.
Technique:
Relax your hands! This will help relax your shoulders, neck and body. When you relax your hands you should feel yourself using your core to hold you up in the water which will reduce drag. Research has also shown slightly open fingers is fastest.
Training:
Have a purpose for each session. Avoid throwing the kitchen sink at each session and plan which energy system you are going to train and focus on that. This will help you improve quicker as you are getting the most time in zone possible, and it will take less time to recover from than a multi zone session.
Racing:
Before the swim start try rubbing sand between your hands to increase sensitivity and feel for the water. Build into the race especially if you are doing a long distance triathlon. It's easy to get caught up in going out hard in the swim and burning matches which could hurt you later in the race. Instead try taking it out slower and treating the whole day as one long time trial.
