Another fine morning – and a chance to revisit one of the Dragons’ pre-season demons; the Suburbs Stingrays. This top-of-table-team gave us a good old seeing to in our last clash (90-45), and it was time to test how far the Dragons had improved through the season.
It was a tough game with the sides evenly balanced at the break. A combination of solid defence and a number of breakaway runs from either side showed that both teams were strong in attack and defence. However, the Dragons managed to work their magic just a little more in the second half and came away victorious.
Try scoring duties were distributed around the team with two each to Cody, Hamish, and Luke and three-try bags to Harvies and Jack Rose. However, what brought home the victory today was the awesome teamwork – great support play for the ball carrier and a real desire to make each and every rip count.
Player of the day goes to Cody with great plays on attack and some desperation rips to keep the Stingrays at bay. Luke showed a huge improvement in his defensive game this week and a real willingness to get up-close-and-personal to get some very handy rips – comes away with Ripper of the day for his efforts. Luke also brought up 200 points for his season today with a gutsy run 65m up the field. Hamish showed some real steel in a very good all-round performance and takes the Effort of the day prize.
The Dragons should be very proud of their efforts today – they were focussed and the win came from hard work and great teamwork.
Final Score: Dragons 60:55 Stingrays

Suburbs Dragons v Suburbs Cougars
Avondale Racecourse 1a
10:15am Saturday 21st July
Back to the racecourse, but this time for a challenge from one of the other Suburbs U7 sides - the Cougars!
Although a bit grey overhead, it was hard underfoot and made for some good running rugby today.
Five of the boys crossed the line today contributing to our tally of points: Luke and Cody with 3 apiece, Jack Rose and Andre with 2 each and Hamish with a single - although it was a team effort again today with some really good support play leading to fantastic forward progress up the field.
Hamish's haul today belies his contribution to the Dragon's win and he takes away Player of the day. Andre had a high "nuisance factor" for the opposition today - popping up where they least needed him. Ripper of the day goes to him. And Nixon put his hand up for more action today and receives the Effort of the day award for his good work.
Nixon Suddens - Effort of the day
You may have noted that the coaching team have been keeping track of season and career tallies for the boys and making a point of announcing milestones on the day (as well as a follow-up mention in our game summary here).
Today's achievement goes to Jack Rose who has moved passed 400 career points (now on 405) - fantastic effort Jack!
A solid performance today and a well-deserved win.
Final Score: Dragons 55:45 Cougars

Most of the 2012 Suburbs Dragons played in the Suburbs Under 6 Spiders in 2011 - although Jack Cobb can be spotted playing for his team last year, Suburbs Under 6 Blue. These are a selection of photos of the boys donning the old Bay Lynn strip for the months of April and May, before they got their new red spider jerseys - photos from June, July and August will be posted soon.

Suburbs Dragons v Ponsonby Kelston Black
Avondale Racecourse 3a
10:15am Saturday 14th July
Two weeks of fine weather made for a good track and a fast game. Ponsonby were a polished team – very fast off the mark in defence and with an extre...mely high rip rate, the combination of which held the Dragons at bay on multiple occasions soaking up the six tackles. This made every try the Dragons did dot down hard-earned points on the board. Five Dragons scored singles today: Jack’s Rose and Cobb, Luke, Hamish and Harvies. Jack Rose’s try today brings up 200 points for the season – an awesome effort.
The opposition also had some very deft players on attack which played merry havoc with the Dragons defence making the lads turn and chase time and time again. The boys were certainly up against it today but didn’t give up trying and trying and trying again to make headway against a tough team.
Stand-out performance of the day was Jack Rose – a phenomenal all-round game with very focussed attacking plays and dogged defence. His efforts today moved coach Paul to award him both the Player of the day and Ripper of the day trophies. Hamish also put his hand up a heck of a lot today for a piece of the action and grabs Effort of the day in doing so. Ponsonby simply too good for the Dragons today.
Final Score: Dragons 25:90 Pons-Kelston Black

This week saw the return of a formidable opponent - Waitakere Maroon. With coach Paul Morgan away this week, it was Vaughn’s job to get the boys prepped. The Dragons were trading try for try in the first half with some great breakaway runs by the boys but equally some awesome defence from the opponents meant that the glory was cut short just before the try-line on a number of occasions. Ethan Rhys and Cody had great attacking games getting up there fast causing havoc for Waitakere while Jack Cobb and Jacob had some great “up and go” short bursts which set up tries for Hamish (3), Jack Rose (4), Harvies (2), Andre (1) and Jake C (1).
Down 2 tries at the end of the first half, Vaughn got another team talk in while the boys devoured oranges.
The boys all worked tirelessly in the 2nd half with great defence again this week from Cody and Jack Rose and a gutsy attacking performance from the team winning by just 1 try. Hamish got Player of the Day, while Ethan receives this weeks trophy for Ripper of the Day. Rhys gets Effort of the Day with a solid game up front.
Final score a 55-45 thrashing.
