Honouring Sir Peter Blake
1 October 1948 – 5 December 2001

Today we remember Sir Peter Blake, a true icon of New Zealand sailing and a legend whose legacy lives on.

Sir Peter’s famous Steinlager 2 campaign helped define one of the greatest chapters in world sailing history. In the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race, skippering Steinlager 2, Sir Peter achieved the ultimate clean sweep, winning all six legs on both line honours and handicap. A feat so dominant it remains unmatched to this day.

His journey to that moment was forged through resilience and grit. During his third Whitbread in 1981/82, after two earlier unsuccessful campaigns, Sir Peter and the crew of Ceramco were dismasted on the very first leg. Against all odds, they sailed an extraordinary 2,500 nautical miles under jury rig to Cape Town, a testament to his leadership, seamanship and unbreakable spirit.

Sir Peter sailed in five Whitbread Round the World races, but it was Steinlager 2 that cemented his place in sporting history and inspired a generation of sailors around the world.

Today, we remember not only the victories, but the courage, determination and leadership that defined Sir Peter Blake. His legacy continues to live on through New Zealand sailing and the enduring story of Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand. πŸŒŠπŸ’™
