Getting young men to move the way their bodies were intended to move. Let Courage be the Test
03/03/2019
In his final year of Secondary school Luan represented Functional Strength Olympic at the 2019 Auckland champs.
Today the focus was on being technically proficient rather than going for PB's as it was a championship event. He went 5/6 and in the process became Junior Auckland Champ for the 109+ division. Luan showed how much his technique has really improved and comfortably doing the weights put on the bar by coach Richie W
Also today the young man got to warm up next to and share the platform with some real olympic weightlifting Nz legends like David Liti Danny Nemani & Joachim setefano
Thanks to Papatoetoe Olympic Weightlifting Club for hosting a great competition

Showing some school pride!
02/09/2018
Just a quick summary of quite a successful weekend I believe, the young men who competed showed true character and represented Westlake boys with Pride.
Roy Johansen - Under 77kg
3rd place in a very tight battle for top placings, showed great composure under pressure. Personal Best total and building towards the Olympic Weightlifting NZ junior and senior Nationals 2018
Abdulrahman Almarkshi, Cheng Yu Cheng & Tony Lee - Under 77kg
All performed amazingly well for their first ever comp, all finished in the top 10. So much potential and technical proficiency from these young men.
Caleb Barr - under 85kg
3rd place, great come back from injury. With a weeks training performed well with some comfortable lifts out on the platform.
Andre Luan De Beer - 94kg+
3rd Place, Luan showed great composure in a tight battle and some clever coaching saw him beat out a tough competitor to earn himself a bronze medal.
Jayden Peter Tabani-ivi - 94kg+
2nd place, Jayden a very strong and competent young man showed he had the technique to match his strength. Lifted well going 6/6 (every lifters dream).
Westlake boys held their own as a Team, pretty awesome for about 7 weeks of Training from majority of these young athletes.
Team points:
1st - Rangitoto high school 15points
2nd - Gisbourne High school 10 points
3rd - Westlake boys, Auckland Grammar & Otago Boys High school
Westlake Boys High school was pretty competitive with schools that have alot of history with weightlifting and winning the Challenge cup (Boys team title).
Huge thanks to Coach Gabby and Student coach Caleb for their continued efforts in helping these young men achieve their goals and constantly creating quality movement and expecting the very the best of these young men. Yes it is an individual sport but nothing can be achieved without a good Team behind you.
I'd just like to thank Westlake Boys High School for the opportunity to come in and grow the sport of Olympic weightlifting and give the young men a chance to be better than they were yesterday. Without the schools support we cannot achieve and look to the future.
What a weekend,
Coach Richie
