Many of you will have read of the passing of Sir Barry Curtis - our long-term Patron of Tennis Pakuranga as well as the long-serving mayor of Manukau City Council.  Sir Barry was instrumental in shepherding through the expansion of the club from 2 courts to the current 6 courts with a spacious clubhouse via the Manukau City Council Shared Responsibility Scheme.  This scheme saw the Council putting up 25% of the cost and providing another 50% via an interest free loan repayable over 15 years.  Without Sir Barry’s input and oversight the club may well have not expanded and thus would have ceased to exist as a viable entity.

 

Many of our newer members will not have seen much of Sir Barry as age and declining health took its toll.  But older members will remember his inspiring and vigorous speeches at our AGM/Opening Days.  He was always prepared to attend and always left members feeling uplifted about the club and its achievements.  It is sad to think that we will no longer be able to hear him remark with unfailing regularity on the sight of his good friend, Eric behind the bar (Eric and Sir Barry played hockey together).

 

Sir Barry had a talent for remembering people and the issues associated with them.  Tom Young remembers literally bumping (backside to backside) into Sir Barry in Bunnings.  Even though they had only met a few times Sir Barry knew immediately who Tom was and they spent 10 minutes discussing tennis club issues.  Sir Barry was very upset by the fact the club was having to shift and was fond of saying that such a thing would never have happened on his watch.  Under his guidance Manukau City Council policy was to encourage the formation of sports clubs and help provide the facilities for them to operate from.  He saw sport and the associated parks as being an integral part of a healthy community.

 

Many of you will remember Sir Barry referring to Tennis Pakuranga as a legend in the community. Well, you were also a legend at Tennis Pakuranga Sir Barry, and your place in our club’s history is secure.

We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome **Gajane Vage** as the new **Head Coach** at **Pakuranga Tennis Club**! 💙 Gajane joins us from Estonia with over **14 years of coaching experience** in both her home country and Vienna, Austria, and is **ITF-qualified** with a strong track record of developing players at all levels — from beginners to aspiring competitors.

As a player, Gajane was a standout competitor, winning multiple national junior titles and ranking in the **ITF Junior World Top 200** during her competitive years. Her passion for technique, smart match play, and fostering a love for tennis makes her the perfect fit to lead our coaching programmes.

Gajane’s international experience, multilingual communication skills, and commitment to helping players grow will bring exciting opportunities for everyone in our club — juniors, adults, beginners and interclub competitors alike.

It’s a bring-a-plate event, so bring along your favourite dish to share — sweet, savoury, homemade, or store-bought, it’s all welcome! 🍰🥗🍗 The more variety, the better the feast!

🎾💙 Interclub Action – Let’s Support Our Teams! 💙🎾

It’s another big weekend of Interclub tennis, and we’re calling on all members to get behind our players! Today, our Ferrier Cup Team is taking the court and representing the club with determination, teamwork, and true competitive spirit. Let’s rally together and show them the support they deserve! 🙌🔥

We also have two teams competing away from home, Open Men Singles & Second Grade Men and although they’re battling it out on different courts, they’re very much part of our club family. Send them your encouragement, cheer them on from afar, and let’s make sure they feel that club pride wherever they play. 💪🎾
