Bathrooms are funny places. They’re supposed to be where you relax.

If your house doesn’t smell like cleaning products… is it still clean?

For years, we’ve been taught to associate certain smells with a freshly cleaned home.

Lemon. Pine. Bleach. That unmistakable “someone’s been cleaning” smell.

But fragrance isn’t the same thing as cleanliness.

When you clean your home, have you ever thought about what you’re breathing in while you do it?

A new Australian study published in 2026 looked at the cleaning habits and respiratory health of 318 adults.

Researchers found that people in the heaviest-use group, who regularly used a wider range of products such as sprays, bleach, polishes, solvents and acids, had higher odds of current asthma and lower measured lung function than people in the minimal-use group.

Importantly, the study found an association. It doesn’t prove that cleaning products caused the respiratory problems, but it does give us something worth thinking about.

We tend to focus on what we’re removing when we clean: grease, dirt, dust and grime.
Perhaps we should also think about what we’re adding to our homes in the process.
