We’re back at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino this weekend for Round Two of the Lucas Oil Hydro Thunder Series in conjunction with the Lakeland Powerboat Club and the battle at the front is already heating up.
Fresh off his Round One victory, Jack Lupton (GP33) arrives as the driver to beat. But it’s far from a comfortable lead, with four other GP Hydroplanes ready to pounce. Among them is current Hydro Thunder Champion Ken Lupton, who will be looking to strike back and close the gap on his brother after a strong second place finish at Mangakino.
After uncharacteristic engine issues in the opening round, both David Alexander (Miss Waverley) and Steve Preece (Miss Marsden Cove) are eager to return to form and put themselves back in the fight for that top step something their teams are more than capable of.
Scott Coker, coming off a well earned third place in the Round One Grand Final, sits second on the championship ladder, 31 points behind Jack. With momentum on his side, Coker will be pushing hard to close that gap and chase his first win of the season.
Christchurch’s Andy Knight had initially planned to join the field this weekend, but a fuel pump related engine issue has unfortunately ruled him out. The team will regroup with sights set on returning at Round Three at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel.
The Gambler is another late withdrawal a reminder that racing doesn’t always play by the script.
Racing action kicks off with the Total Transport Junior Series at 9:45am Saturday, and again at 9:00am Sunday, supported by a strong lineup of classes across the weekend.
Mangakino is set for a massive two days see you lakeside for all the action.

2025/26 Lucas Oil NZ Hydro Thunder Series – Round 1 Preview
The wait is ove, the eighth season of the Lucas Oil NZ Hydro Thunder Series roars into action this weekend at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino!
Last season saw one of the closest championship battles ever, with a different winner at every round, a first in Hydro Thunder history. This year’s lineup is stacked, featuring every past series champion back on the water and hungry for more.
The Contenders:
David Alexander and Ken Lupton each enter with three series titles , could one of them make history with a fourth Lucas Oil Hydro Thunder Series?
Jack Lupton returns from his North American campaign, bringing his powerful GP33 Hydroplane back home, and as many say, he’s the one to shake things up this season.
Scott Coker is back in Howzat after winning his first Grand Final last season at Lake Karapiro, eyes firmly on another win, and maybe the Lucas Oil Hydro Thunder Series.
Steve Preece makes a welcome return in Miss Marsden Cove after a bit of heart surgery to the engine, Steve is ready to hit the start line running once again.
Peter Dudson returns, this time behind the wheel of Kevin Ireland’s Gambler, Peter Dudson recently campaigned GP57 Gulf Oils, a boat now in Australian hands that we hope to see back on NZ waters soon.
Warwick Lupton steps into the boat Jack ran last year, now re-numbered GP333, adding another twist to the family rivalry.
We’ve still got three more teams joining the Series soon, Jason Haggerty, Andy Knight, and last season’s Round Two winner at Mangakino, Raymond Hart so the field is only getting stronger!
Alongside the Oil Hydro Thunder Series, fans can enjoy racing from the Total Transport Juniors, Red Hot Marine Clubmans, Modified Hydroplanes, Procom, Pro Stock, and Series 3000 classes — all delivering high-speed thrills.
Schedule:
Saturday: Racing from 10am
Sunday: Racing from 9:30am
