This Saturday’s run workout: Hill bounding and over-speed strides at Birkenhead Wharf. Straight out of the Lydiard Playbook - this workout should be used in the transition between base and speed work (that’s now for those going to the Woolongong World Tri Champs). I know this session works (especially for old people) because I had it in my programme when I won the Aquathon, Sprint Triathlon and Standard Distance Triathlon in the 50+ age group at the 2014 ITU Edmonton Triathlon World Champs. The workout will take around 55 minutes total. That includes 15 minutes easy running from Birkenhead Park to Birkenhead Wharf, the main set, and the run back to Birkenhead Park. It’s not a super hard session but it WILL put hairs on your chest! Even if you’re injured and can’t do the hard parts, get down to Birkenhead Park after Saturday’s swim and bike sessions to get a good feel for this valuable workout.

We're thrilled to announce that Coach Laura Quilter has qualified for the 50m butterfly at the 2025 Aquatic World Championships with an impressive FINA "A" time! This achievement showcases her dedication and resilience after years away from competitive swimming. As we gear up for winter training, let's channel this energy into our upcoming sessions. Remember, there's no official training on King's Birthday Monday, but we encourage those eager to swim to meet at 7 am at Takapuna Boating Club for a swim. Together, we'll build towards the World Triathlon Sprint and Olympic Distance Championships in Woolongong this October!

Christmas Training Camp Update:
The first two days have been solid. 4.6k swim this morning followed by a group ride that splintered early. Our group had a great ride along the cycle paths to Mangere for a pie and a coke then back via Devonport Ferry. Peter Kadar got more pie on his face than in his mouth but still picked up the most green jersey points along the way.
The camp plan is weather dependent. We'll post more detailed plans three days in advance on the Fit For Fun and NHTC Member's pages so you can make plans and get a "leave pass" if needed.
It might pay to follow or like "Fit For Fun" on Bookface and/or join the NHTC Members' page if you want to get regular updates.
We'll meet most mornings (except Sunday and possibly Friday) at the Takapuna Boating Club at around fifteen minutes before 7 O'clock. The current plan (subject to change due to weather) is:
Wednesday 1st January 2025
7.00 am: Easy 60 minute sea swim
8.30 am: Easy L*D Run (up to three hours for IM athletes). Likely around Tuff Crater, Onepoto Basin etc
Thursday 2nd January (weather dependent but looking good at present)
7.00 am: Solid 80 minute sea swim
8.30 am: Breakfast
9.30 am: Solid 3 ½ hr bike (to Matakana). Gear transported by van.
1.00 pm (approx.) 40 minute run
Lunch at Matakana.
Lazy afternoon at the beach
Evening BBQ at Matakana. Stay the night if you want (camping), or head home after dinner.
Adventure day - apply for all day pass
Friday 3rd January
7.00 am: Easy 60 minute sea swim (most likely from Omaha Beach)
Saturday 4th January
7.00 am: Swim/bike/run (3-5 hrs total)
Sunday 5th January
Long ride or: Confess your sins/clean the house/iron shirts for work on Monday?
Monday 6th January 2024
6.00 am: Back to our usual weekly training programme starting with a swim at 6.00 am.

Just had confirmation that racing for men and women for the Paris Olympic Games Triathlon is going ahead this evening (NZ time) so... see you at Takapuna Boating Club from 5.50 pm onwards.
Bring your own food and drink. Bring running and swimming gear because we'll likely run around the lake and swim out to the first buoy between the women's and men's race.
