Today, we remember and honour Papali'itele Max Amata Taogaga, known around the world as professional wrestler Siva Afi, who has passed away.
Born in Samoa and part of the wave of South Pacific migrants who made New Zealand home, Siva Afi was a pioneer of pro wrestling in our region.
Debuting in 1974, under the guidance of Peter Maivia and Steve Rickard, Siva Afi became a household name as a regular on the top-rated On The Mat television show. In 1979, Afi competed at the famous Western Springs event before venturing across the wrestling world.
After retiring from the ring, Siva Afi devoted his life to ministry, serving as the Pastor of Reign of Fire Ministries in Apia.
Today, the world celebrates Pacific representation like the Moana movie franchise, while the WWE's Bloodline storytelling gives fans a glimpse into our cultural values. We cannot forget the original navigators and storytellers like Siva Afi who helped make these opportunities possible.
As a proud South Pacific-owned and operated Dojo and NJPW TAMASHII brand, we are honoured to bring these opportunities into COLD WAR at Western Springs next weekend, where Siva Afi competed almost 50 years earlier.
Our roster for this event, consisting mostly of New Zealand and Australian wrestlers, will include 14 wrestlers of South Pacific heritage, a reflection of those opportunities.
Our deepest gratitude to Siva Afi for charting the course for future generations and showing that Pacific wrestlers could stand alongside the very best in the world.
"E lē galo le tautai na folau muamua."
The navigator who sailed first is never forgotten.
Fa'afetai tele lava mo lou sao.
Ia manuia lau malaga, Siva Afi
