We’re so happy to announce Felipe “Baiano” as part of Axé na Ilha do Sul 2026!

Originally from Bahia, Brazil, Felipe has called New Zealand home for many years and is now based right here in Marlborough!

Felipe’s Capoeira roots come through the school of Mestre Itapoan, one of the important students of the legendary Mestre Bimba, connecting him directly to a rich tradition of Capoeira Regional and Bahian culture.

And this October, Felipe is bringing a little piece of Bahia to our Capoeira event! 🇧🇷

Felipe will be teaching a Samba de Roda workshop!

If you know Felipe, you already know, when he’s around, you’re going to have a good time! A charismatic and talented musician with plenty of energy, rhythm and Brazilian spirit, we’re very happy to have him joining us for the weekend.

Get ready to move, learn, laugh and experience some Samba de Roda!

Professor Carcará is coming to Axé na Ilha do Sul!
We're really happy to have Professor Carcará, from Espaço Cultural Aotea-Aruandê (Wanaka), joining us in Marlborough this October.
Originally from Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Professor Carcará is a disciple of Mestre Pop and has been living in New Zealand for the past 6½ years, four years in Gisborne and the last two and a half in Wanaka, where he's been growing and sharing his Capoeira.
It's always good to bring together people from different corners of the country to train, exchange experiences, and strengthen our Capoeira community.
Thank you for making the trip to Marlborough, Professor. We look forward to sharing a great weekend of training, music, and rodas with you.

One of the true OGs!
Nathan Pflaum Instrutor Parrudo has been around since the early days and has built up many years of experience and knowledge in Capoeira. His journey has taken him around the world, training, playing and creating strong connections with Capoeiristas wherever he has travelled or lived.

He has a beautiful game and plenty of knowledge to share, and you can see the years of experience every time he steps into the roda. A true man of the world, with Capoeira being a big part of his journey along the way.

He is simply a great guy, the kind of person who, when needed, will go above and beyond for others. He has even been called a hero on more than one occasion!

We are really happy to know that Instrutor Parrudo will be coming to Marlborough this October to join us for Axé na Ilha do Sul!

Thank you to everyone who trained hard with us this term at MGC! It's been awesome to see new members joining our Capoeira family, and every one of you is moving in the right direction towards your next grading. Keep showing up, stay consistent, and trust the process.

Rain or shine, hot or cold, summer or winter... he's always there. Monitor Biriba is a true example of what commitment looks like, and we have so much respect and appreciation for his dedication, discipline, and work ethic.

For many years, Professora Bandida has been one of the most important members of Capoeira Resistência, supporting and helping our group grow since the very first days of Mestre Bira's journey in Wellington, New Zealand.

We are super excited to announce that Instrutora Machadinha will be joining us at Axé na Ilha do Sul 2026 in Marlborough!

If you've ever trained with Liz, you know exactly the kind of energy she brings to every class. Her training sessions are full of enthusiasm, positivity, and determination. She's one of those people who is always pushing herself to become a better capoeirista and inspiring everyone around her to do the same.

Machadinha has been part of the Resistência family for a very, very long time, dedicating countless years to Capoeira and helping our community grow stronger. Her passion for the art is contagious, and we're truly honoured to have her confirm her participation in our first ever Capoeira Encontro in Marlborough.

But don't get tricked by that big smile in the roda! 😁 Behind it is a very sharp game, and she can catch you off guard in the blink of an eye! Her game is energetic, playful, and full of surprises.

This October, the South Island will be filled with amazing energy, friendships, and plenty of axé, and we couldn't imagine this event without her being part of it!
