Brilliant day to ride up Rapaki today. It's now been 31 years since I first tackled Christchurch's classic gravel route to the Summit road.

A guy on a beautiful carbon duallie caught me, and made my day by saying he loved my touring bike.

The Snell Foundation, which tests and certifies helmets, recommends replacing your cycle helmet every 5 years.

Frankly, after 5 years of daily use and abuse, my commuting helmet is a manky, dented, scuffed-up mess that absolutely needs replacing.

Trouble is, what to replace it with? My commuting helmet has a small peak, a rear light, and that offers good coverage with understated looks. I love it, and want all those features again.

Enter the Giro Cormick. Available in Black or Safety Yellow, it costs $100.00, comes with a baseball cap peak, and is admirably light. For another 40.00, you get the Giro Vent Light, which plugs neatly into the back of the helmet.

I got one, tried it, and then ordered a bunch more for the shop.
