Looking for something fun, active and confidence-building these school holidays? 💦 Our Starfish Swim School Holiday Program is back! 🐠

Unfortunately, we've had to make the decision to cancel this afternoon's lessons.

Although the pool temperature has increased to 27.7°C, it is still not warm enough for us to operate. Once the pool covers are removed and the air temperature drops, the water temperature will continue to fall, making it unsuitable for lessons.

💙 A Special Farewell to Holly 💙

Next week marks Holly's final week with us at Starfish Swim School, and while we're incredibly sad to see her go, we're also so excited for her!

Holly has been given an amazing opportunity to complete her final primary teaching placement in Fairlie as she finishes her teaching degree. We couldn't be prouder of everything she has achieved.

Over her time at Starfish, Holly has become such a valued member of our team. She has built wonderful relationships with so many of our swimmers and families, and her kindness, enthusiasm, and dedication have made a lasting impact. She will certainly be missed around the pool.

The good news is that this isn't goodbye forever! We're hoping to have Holly back in Term 4 to help cover a few shifts before she graduates, so keep an eye out for a familiar face.

Holly's final shift with us will be Saturday, 8 August. If you're in before then, please stop by to wish her all the best and give her a big Starfish goodbye. 💙

This week we mark World Drowning Prevention Day. This is a global initiative, held on July 25 and led by the World Health Organisation. It provides an opportunity to reflect on drowning statistics here and around the world.

In New Zealand, Water Safety New Zealand is taking the moment to focus on a concerning trajectory for the 2026 year. Already, 57 people have drowned in New Zealand this year. 18 more than at the same time last year.

Updated predictive modelling now anticipates up to 101 lives could be lost in preventable drownings by the end of December 2026.

Men, aged 25 and above, continue to make up more than 80% of drowning deaths.

The theme of World Drowning Prevention Week is Turn the Tide. We ask all of New Zealand to join us in turning the tide on this trajectory.

-Always wear a lifejacket
-Don’t go alone
-Take care to understand your environment
-Check the conditions

This year, checking wind and weather forecasts before and during your time in, on, or around water becomes even more critical with the predicted intensity of El Niño.
