Ballet rhythm isn’t just about counting—it’s how young children learn timing, coordination, and confidence through joyful movement. In this guide, we share age-appropriate ways to introduce rhythm in a safe, nurturing space, helping little dancers feel secure while building musicality step by step. At Kim Marie’s School of Dance, we focus on creating structure that supports each child’s individuality, from first classes to early technique. If you’re in Christchurch (especially Riccarton and nearby), this is a wonderful starting point for bringing dance to life at the right pace.

What a wonderful Term 3 it has been at Kim Marie’s School of Dance!

We have had so much fun dancing, learning, playing and creating beautiful memories together. It has been amazing to see how much our dancers have grown in confidence, friendships and their love of dance throughout the term.

And what an exciting time for our little dance school — we have grown so much that we are opening two new classes in Term 4! It is so lovely to see our dance family continuing to grow.

I’m also really looking forward to Term 4 as we begin putting together our end-of-year production and work towards our end-of-year show. There is so much exciting dancing to look forward to!

Thank you to all of our wonderful dancers and families for being part of our dance family. Your support means so much to me.

Have a beautiful and relaxing term break. Enjoy some time to rest, play and have fun!

See you all in Term 4, my ballerinas!
Love,
Kim x

Another lovely piece of feedback from a parent ❤️

For me, it’s about so much more than simply learning ballet. I want my youngest ballerinas to develop a genuine love for dance while feeling safe, calm, supported and confident enough to express themselves.

Creating a warm and nurturing environment where little ones can take their time, build confidence and learn the foundations of ballet at their own pace is at the heart of what I do.

Seeing a little ballerina who may have been nervous at first come out happier, more confident and excited to join in is exactly why I love teaching these classes. 🩰💕

Our little ballerinas LOVE being our helpers!

From setting up the props before class to helping pack everything away at the end, they are always so excited to have an important job to do.

These little moments are so much more than just helping — they are opportunities for learning. Setting up and tidying props encourages independence, responsibility, cooperation and confidence, while also supporting coordination, problem-solving and following instructions.

It also gives our dancers a sense of belonging and ownership within their class. They know they are an important part of our little dance community.

And of course… they think it’s pretty special getting to be the ones who set up the fun!

Little hands, big learning, happy ballerinas.

“Which class is right for my child?” It’s one of the first things most Christchurch families ask me, and it’s a great question. 🌟

At Kim Marie’s School of Dance, I don’t just hand you a timetable and hope for the best. I take the time to understand your child before anything else.

For our littlest dancers, Tiny Twirls is a gentle, fun starting point. As children grow in confidence and skill, they move through Grade One and Grade Two at their own pace. For older beginners, whether a child or an adult, walking into a class where others seem to know the routine can feel daunting. Here’s what I do. I introduce you to the class, explain that you’re new, and often ask a more experienced student to buddy up with you. The whole class knows to make you feel welcome. You’re always free to observe, ask questions and take your time.

No one is expected to know everything on day one. That’s not how children learn, and it’s not how I teach.

We have classes on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings across our Halswell and Riccarton locations. Book a free trial class via the link in my bio and let’s find the right fit for your child. 💛

✨🎀 Tiny Twirls – Rhythm & Movement! 🎀✨

Our Tiny Twirls dancers had lots of fun warming up their arms and hands this morning using our tapping sticks! 🩰✨

The dancers practised keeping a steady beat, listening carefully and following different rhythms as they tapped along together. 🥁🎶

These simple activities are a wonderful way to build important foundations for ballet. Developing a sense of rhythm and musicality helps our little dancers learn to move their bodies in time with the music, while tapping also encourages coordination, concentration, listening skills and control of the hands and arms.

For our youngest dancers, learning to respond to a beat helps prepare them for ballet movements such as marching, skipping, jumps and travelling steps, where timing and musical awareness are so important. 🌟

It was a fun and energetic way to get our bodies ready for dancing — and our Tiny Twirls did a fantastic job! 💕🩰

We can’t wait to see what our little dancers get up to next! 🌈✨
