WHAT A SEASON FOR SOME OF OUR HILLMORTON GIRLS! 🏆

A huge congratulations to Amelia Bunn, Naomi Thompson, Summer Bartlet, Amy Zandbergen and Eliza Zandbergen, who have been part of an outstanding Halswell Hawks U20 Development Team this season! ⚽️

The team recently took on the Alan Fraser Memorial Tournament in Kaiapoi, competing in the U20 division against teams from as far afield as Nelson and South Canterbury — and they absolutely dominated!

✨ UNBEATEN throughout the tournament
⚽ 23 goals scored
🧤 Just 1 goal conceded
🏆 Clear winners of the U20 grade!

A special congratulations to Naomi, who was selected as the Team MVP by the team’s two coaches — an awesome achievement! 👏⭐

And the success didn’t stop there…

This same Halswell U20 Development Team — featuring five Hillmorton girls — has now gone on to clean up the Mainland New World Women’s Championship AND the Mainland Māwhero Charity Cup, which run alongside each other throughout the winter season! 🏆🏆

Congratulations Amelia, Naomi, Summer, Amy and Eliza — what a season! 👏🔥

What a season for our basketball programme!

It’s been an incredible season filled with success, growth and plenty to celebrate across our Basketball teams. Our Junior Girls made history by reaching the Junior Premier Final for the first time, putting together an outstanding season and showing tremendous determination and growth. They battled hard against Rangi Ruru in a thrilling final, narrowly missing out on the title.

Our U23A Boys were crowned champions after an impressive season, with Louis Dowall named Finals MVP following a standout 24-point, 12-rebound performance.

The U15A Boys were also exceptional, going undefeated all season to claim the U15A title. Luke Findlater was named Season MVP and selected in the All-Star Five, while Coby Tang took out Finals MVP after a huge 30-point performance.

Shout to Benji Habinshuti who made all star five selection for u20A grade.

Our U13A Boys also enjoyed an excellent season, making it through to the final with a young squad featuring several double-bottom-age players. While they fell to a strong Gators side, their improvement, determination and development throughout the season were fantastic to see.

Adding to the success, our Junior Boys A team claimed the Grocott Trophy for the second time making final appearances in four consecutive year, showing great composure and resilience in a hard-fought final against Shirley. Coby Tang was again outstanding, earning Finals MVP honours with 34 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Our Senior A Girls team were in the Premier Div 1 competition for the first time ever and finished 4th overall after narrowly going down in the Semi final to Cashmere. Girls will now shift their focus to South Island tournament where they will be competing to qualify for Secondary Schools Nationals.

Our Senior Boys A had a narrow loss in the Semi finals after finishing the season as number one seed. Boys will also now shift their focus to South Island Tournament.

A huge congratulations to all our players, coaches, managers and whānau for their commitment, support and hard work throughout the season. What an incredible year for our basketball programme!

Luke Street Continues Record-Breaking Form on the Ice

Luke has continued his outstanding season with a series of exceptional performances on the ice, breaking multiple New Zealand records and strengthening his case for international selection.

At the Canterbury Alpine Short Track Speed Skating Cup, held at Alpine Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch, Luke competed in the Junior A (17–18 years) division. He produced an incredible clean sweep, setting five New Zealand Junior A domestic records—one in every event he raced. His new records came in the 500m, 777m, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m. His remarkable 3000m performance also saw him finish just four seconds shy of the New Zealand Senior Open record.

Following the competition, Luke spent the July school holidays in Melbourne, training with Australia’s top athletes at the Australian Ice Racing High Performance Camp, gaining valuable experience as he prepares for the international season.

Luke has also been reselected to the New Zealand Racing Pool, with confirmation of his Junior World Cup selection expected soon. If selected, he will represent New Zealand at the Junior World Cup events in Bormio, Italy, in November and Astana, Kazakhstan, in February.

Luke’s outstanding form continued at the South Island Short Track Ice Speed Skating Championships in Dunedin on Sunday, 19 July, where he delivered another record-breaking performance.

The highlight of the day was an extraordinary skate in the Open 3000m, where Luke shattered the New Zealand Open record, ending a mark that had stood for 11 years. He also established new Junior A domestic records in the 500m, 777m, 1000m, and 3000m. His 500m time of 45.5 seconds was a new personal best, while his 777m performance improved the record he had set just three weeks earlier by an astonishing 10 seconds.

The championships weren’t without drama, however. Luke experienced a crash during his 500m time trial, giving the venue’s new safety padding system an unexpected test. Thankfully, the padding did its job, and Luke was able to continue competing.

Congratulations Luke!
