Way back in 2012 I was involved with this short documentary promoting skateparks in our local community. All of which is still relevant today! Curated by a good friend of mine, Alex Winch, whilst we were living in Bournemouth, UK. If you have a spare 15 minutes, feel free to check out what we were facing in Dorset and all the positivity experienced by all who got involved with these incredible facilities, including the Police!

Sumner skatepark to be built by Hunter Civil.

3 upgrades are on the cards for CCC long term plan, these include Wycola, Linwood and Bromley. I didn't see Waltham on the list but have made some enquiries as to what the plan is. Maybe we can have another send off jam 😉

The person I've been speaking with at CCC suggested that collectively we come up with pushing a world class facility and using the Olympics as leverage. Perhaps somewhere like Nga Puna Wai or QE2 to fit with the 'sport' demographic. Just some ideas 💡 The north island is miles ahead of us with the parks being built and I'm super keen to push this in the right direction for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

Waltham has a budget allocated of around 330k, initial consultation will begin towards the end of the year. First ideas suggest that to fit a full size basketball court and new play area, the original bowl will have to be demolished as this court will fit parallel to the swimming pool. The preference would be to save it and extend if possible. I have requested some overhead plans to see the proposed layout and then possibly come up with some suggestions ourselves. Once I have more information I'll update again. Waltham upgrade dates likely 2025! Following Waltham will be Wycola and Linwood.

Just sharing some positive news, over the next couple years 3 parks are being upgraded. I cannot comment on which ones at this stage but I will ensure local skaters/BMXers are involved from start to finish.

Sumner Skatepark received confirmation of its resource consent being granted. It will now move onto the next phase and a contractor will be selected to build the park!

I've been in contact with the engagement advisor for the Wycola Skatepark upgrade. CCC are keen to get some feedback from the group once plans are drawn up. I've recommended some NZ park builders/designers for their consideration.

The purpose of this group is to aid and assist local councils with new skatepark design ideas as and when they come up in communities. If you are aware of any parks being proposed in the greater Canterbury region please inform the group so we can contact council to aid their process.

Sick of the scooter kids getting what they want and cramming in obstacles that just don't work out long term!

Wycola Skatepark in Hornby is looking to get upgraded, please give constructive feedback on what you'd like to see built. Send them pictures and information about what you enjoy and how skateboarding in New Zealand should progress.
