Pontoon Update from the C*C Committee

For those with a keen eye passing by the Christchurch Yacht Club, you will notice that the floating pontoon has been removed. Initially for the purpose of some scheduled maintenance, it was discovered that the main steel structure has more advanced corrosion than anticipated and will now require substantial remediation to ensure it is structurally sound before we can return it to the water.

Safety of our members and the public remain our highest priority. The club is currently exploring various options for the replacement of the structure and reinstatement of the pontoon. Although the pontoon is a very important part of our day-to-day activities, in its absence we can still operate effectively from the launching ramps and beach meaning disruption to the club operations can be managed.

While the floating pontoon is a C*C owned asset, outside of the club program, we welcome it’s considerate use by all in the community and enjoy seeing it used regularly by many young swimmers. C*C wish to reassure its members and the community that its reinstatement remains a club priority.

The cost of this project is considerable, and so we will likely seek external funding to support its timely return.

Stirling effort from the team this morning down at the club. The pontoon has now been lifted out of the water, and rolled upside down. Smith Crane and Construction did a fantastic, professional job getting it out

Tomorrow morning (Wednesday) from 9am we have a working bee to remove all the growth, and get it loaded into the skip

Over the next few weeks, structural elements will be repaired and upgraded before it is out back in the water in time for Opening Day in early September

C*C Floating Pontoon

The C*C Committee wishes to advise that we are embarking on a period of heavy maintenance on our floating pontoon at the club. To facilitate to work required, we are removing the pontoon from the water, and placing the two sections upside down in the club rigging area.

The lift is scheduled for the 30th of June, and the pontoon will be unavailable for some time, while the club completes the required work on the pontoon

We are pleased that the pontoon is such a valuable asset not only to the club, but to the wider community as a whole, and we are committed to ensuring the future of the pontoon.

A varied fleet of 29 boats took to the waters of Moncks Bay to contest the mark foy race.

The Presidents Trophy, raced for by the Senior fleet was won by Luke Riedinger and Vaughan Bamford racing Luke's Flying Dutchman

The Flag Officers Trophy for the Junior Fleet was won by Lewin Smith-Goertgens in his Open Skiff

The Ruth and Cliff Stemmer Family Closing Day Youth Trophy (Starlings) was won by Kieran Ivory in his Starling

Following racing, we celebrated the closing of the season in the clubrooms, with some fantastic food from the marvelous kitchen team of Chris, Kaye, Faye and their helpers.

It was fantastic to see so many boats out on the Estuary this afternoon, with good fleets racing at Pleasant Point Yacht Club and Mount Pleasant Yacht Club - easily over 70 boats out racing between our three clubs!

Massive congratulations to C*C youth sailor, Oak Galbraith, who placed 1st in the Starling class at the PredictWind Girls Regatta at the Kohimarama Yacht Club in Auckland over the weekend. Sailed in light winds, the podium positions were shared around most of the top sailors. Oak won one of the races, and came second in another two during the 5 race series

It was a fantastic day of racing at yesterdays Beveridge Trophy. A light sea breeze filled in through the day, providing just the right amount of wind at the 2.30pm start time

A fleet of 28 boats of all shapes and sizes, including Optimists, Starlings, Zephyrs, ILCAs, OK, Int. Moth, Cropp 4.6 and a Hartley 16 which made for some tricky handicapping!

Sara Watkins, our benefactor sends her apologies for not being able to make racing this season. She has kindly sponsored prizes to the value of $1,000.

The Beveridge Trophy has been raced at our club for nearly 90 years.

The Beveridge Trophy was won by Benji French, sailing an ILCA 6 for the first time (Your handicap is going up Benji!)
1st - Benji French (ILCA 6)
2nd - Peter Maynard (OK)
3rd - Peter Hatton (Int. Moth)
4th - Trevor Kite (Zephyr)
5th - Don le Page (Zephyr)

The Starling division was won by Kieran Ivory, with Madeleine Lucas in 2nd, and Xavier Lucas in 3rd

The Bob Beveridge Trophy was competed for by a good fleet of Optimists
