Here are the results for the 2026 Canterbury Intermediates snooker played 13/14 June.
We had 16 players in the end and many tough battles with it coming down to the last few colours and even "Black to win" !! In between the intense games, the comradery off the baize was great to see also.
Section 1 was particularly close, 3 players had 2 wins, with the final match of the dra
There was enough time on Saturday after section play to do the Quarterfinals. Sunday morning saw semi finals in Main draw playing "Best of 5" games, Paul Whapshott v Dave Marshall on one side and Louise Kerr v Ed Jackson on the other side of the draw.
All players battled hard but he two victors were Dave Marshall and Edwin Jackson, both by 3/1. The final between Ed and Dave saw two evenly matched players that both wanted to win but it was Ed Jackson's "day to shine" and he took the match 3-0.
The Trophy final was between John Wilson and Jordan Collis with John the victor 3-0.

Sunday 7 June saw the Canterbury "Junior Cup" played. This is for the C grade championship and of the 10 players contesting it 5 were new players to CBSA and playing their first ever tournament! Well done to new members Keith Lush, Ritchie Steinberg, Chris Taylor, Leon Tau and 12 year old Harry Muir! Welcome to the CBSA and we look forward to seeing you in future games.
Many of the One frame games in section play were down to the last couple of colours and even Black to win! We had 3 people in each section tie for the second place qualification so we had "black ball " play offs in both sections. This was a new thing for all the players contesting the spot available in each section and a lot of jovial fun was had by all.
Keith Lush and Ritchie Steinberg were the winners of each black ball play off and went to the Main draw semi finals. They both lost their semis to Des Thorpe and Mark Collis. The final was Best of 3 and went to Mark Collis 2/0
Trophy final was between Murray Kirk and Bruce Kay with Murray the victor.

King's Birthday weekend saw the SI 6 Reds and the 2026 Timaru Classic played at the Highfield Golf club and the Timaru Town and Country Club.
20 Players contested the SI 6 Reds on Saturday 30 May. Many of the games were closer than the score line suggests! Main post section had some fierce battles with 3 of the 4 Quarterfinals going the full 5 frames! The semi finals were no different with Mark Canovan v Dave Fomm-Ward in one semi and Nic Moses and Darren Gent in the other. Both went the full 5 frames and were only decided on the last few balls in both battles! Timaru Town & Country club member Darren Gent "flew the flag" for the locals in the Final against Mark Canovan but try as he might he could not take a frame and Mark won 3/0. Trophy final was between Louise Kerr and Jordan Collis with Jordan the victor 2/1
Saturday 31st May was section play day for the Timaru Classic and tough battles were had in sections with some coming down to the last games in section to decide top two and who would be the 4 best #3's to go through to the main draw the next day.
Sunday morning and Last 16 in the Main draw saw 3/1 scores the "flavour of the day" which continued into the Quarterfinals. These scores do not reflect the tough battles that were really being had.
Semi finals and Mark Canovan out played local Greg Adams who had done very well to reach the semi final. the other semi final was an intense battle between Dale Kwok and Dave Fomm-Ward. Dale went to a 2/0 lead and many thought he would be victor 3/0 but Dave Fomm-Ward found a "second wind" and clawed his way back to even things 2 all! Game on in the 5th frame and both had brilliant billiards in-offs and both put the pressure on the other, trying to force that error that would give the advantage in the end Dave Fomm-Ward's long pots were the thing that got him over the line and take the win.
Final Mark Canovan v Dave Fomm-Ward. Two players that are equally talented in making snookers, forcing errors through pressure and have great cue ball control. Both will punish the slightest of errors the other makes. Dave took the first two frames but Mark came back with a great third frame. 4th frame and both played tactical safety but again Dave's long pots were giving him the slight edge and confidence and as much as Mark tried with some great snookers it was Dave Fomm-Ward that took the title 2026 Timaru Classic Champion. Mark Canovan however, took the highest break with a 91cl made in his quarterfinal.
Trophy final was between Brent Stechmann and Mark Collis with Mark taking the match 2/0.

Wednesday 27 May saw the 2026 Billiards Interclub finals evening.
Division 1 final was between Kaiapoi represented by Geoff Lilly / John Fitzgerald and HorKai represented by Gary Oliver / Michael Beattie. Only two players have beaten Gary Oliver this season in the 1 hour games and they were John Fitzgerald and Dave Fomm-Ward. Kudos to them both as that is no mean feat!!
Division 2 was an all Hornby club final with Hornby Blue - Christian Horniman / Fil Nicholson / Paul Templeton reserve against Hornby Gold - Corien Simpson/ Danny Kumar.
The finals for both divisions went to a "count back" of points as it was two games each. Division 2 was won by Hornby Gold 606 pts to 595pts for Hornby Blue, 11 points only the difference so very close!! Division 1 was won by Horkai 1005 to 664 points. Gary Oliver's scores are hard to overcome for his opponents!
We look forward to having Interclub Billiards next season so if you think you fancy a go next year keep it in mind!!

CBSA C grade competition will be played tomorrow and we have 10
competitors for the "Junior Cup".
We will have two sections of 5 and it will be One frame games in
section play as there will be a total of 10 matches in each section.
Time permitting, we will look at having the top two in each section play a semi final and the winners a final "best of 3" . If this is not
possible we will reduce to Final only "best of 3" . As we have at
least 5 new players to CBSA that have not played competitions before, there will be NO "Foul and miss" played , just "Foul".
Please marshall 8.45am for 9am on the tables, please bring besides
your entry fee of $20 a further $5 towards the lunch we will put on to keep everyone's energy levels up.
The two sections are as follows:-
Section 1
Mark Collis, Bruce Kay, Kat McKenzie, Harry Muir, Ritchie Steinberg
Section 2
Murray Kirk, Des Thorpe, Chris Taylor, Keith Lush, Leon Tau
A warm welcome from CBSA to all the new players and good luck to all for your games tomorrow.

Here are the results from the 2026 SI Billiards championship played 16/17 May.
It was good to see Keith Hotton from Invercargill back up again to play in a Billiards tournament and all had great battles, good comradery and some laughs along the way as well.
It will be later this year at the end of September that National B and A Billiards will be hosted in Christchurch.

9/10 May saw the SI snooker championship played with intense battles in section to make definite top 2 and the 3rds having to see if they qualified as the "top 2 #3 in section" to make the "Last 16 round " Sunday morning.
In the "last 16" round Bryson McKenzie played one of his best matches to overcome seasoned snooker player Bill Earle. Both players fought hard to progress to the quarterfinals but Bryson just had "the edge" on the day winning 3/1 . The other big battles in last 16 were Jason Todd v Paul Lewis & Mark Murray v Danny Ryan. Jason and Paul are two seasoned snooker players and neither were giving much away to the other; Paul Lewis' long pot game did him justice and helped garner a 3/2 win over Jason. Danny Ryan from Dunedin played a fired up Mark Murray from Nelson and it was neck and neck going into the 5th frame but as Danny said afterwards "if you play like a muppet at the crucial times you don't get to win!!" Mark Murray progressed to the quarter finals with a 3/2 win.
In the quarter finals Mark Canovan has a 3/0 win over Bryson McKenzie who no doubt learnt heaps about Post section snooker play even though he lost. Kelly Pritchard beat Dale Kwok 3/0 in their quarterfinal battle. Ian Muir and Dave Fomm-Ward strategically put each other under pressure with both experienced players using all their knowledge to try and progress to the semis! that encounter went to Ian Muir 3/2. Paul Lewis continued his progression in this tournament with a 3/1 win over Mark Murray.
Both semi finals were tough encounters between Mark Canovan and Kelly Pritchard & Ian Muir and Paul Lewis.
Kelly had his chances to take his battle against Mark Canovan but unfortunate errors of ball not running as far as wanted or ball "rattling" in the pocket and sitting there when least wanted, letting Mark take the 5th frame and match 3/2.
Ian and Paul's match was just as tough and intense a battle with Paul Lewis' "long pots" standing him in good steed once again, helping him over the line with a 3/2 win against Ian.
the Final between Mark Canovan and Paul Lewis was pretty brisk in the first two frames as Mark was "not mucking around" ! taking the first frame quickly with a stunning 71 break followed by a frame winning 53 in the second frame! Paul Lewis got to play at the table a bit longer in the 3rd frame before Mark sealed that frame also with a 48 break winning match 3/0.
Highest break of the tournament had been Mark Canovan's 64 made in section play which held until the first frame of the final where he made his 71.
The Trophy was just as intense in it's battles as it had a number of players that had only just missed out on the last couple of spots in the Main draw "Last 16". Many of the 2/0 wins do not do justice to the actual instense battles on the tables with some frames only being decided by Pink and Black or Black to win!
Semi finals saw Tone Pelenato v Gary O'Neill and Edwin Jackson v Richard Winfield. Both pairings had intense battles with Tone and Edwin the victors. Tone and Edwin had a tough final with it down to Pink and Black in the first frame but Tone's potting prowess helped him win the 2nd frame and match. Highest break in the Trophy went also the Tone Pelenato who made two 41's as highest score on the day.

We have 37 players for South Island Snooker and I was hoping to bring that up to 40 as 40 is a far better number to work with for section play!!
So this is a call to all those that have not entered to have a think if you could look at playing as a tournament is only as good as the numbers playing. This is always a great tournament, tough games on the table but a very social atmosphere and comradery off of it!
contact CBSA Secretary on 021 1576134 if you can join in the games
