The objectives of the Club are to encourage mountaineering, rock climbing and allied activities, and the enjoyment and conservation of mountain regions; and to bring together those interested in climbing. The day is almost here! This Thursday is our Buy and Sell Night!

DON'T MISS OUT ON ALL THE AWESOME DEALS!

Thank you so much to Bivouac Outdoor , Boulder Co Christchurch , Earth Sea Sky , Adventure Centre and Clip 'n Climb (The Kind Foundation), Further Faster and Uprising for all your help. You guys rock!!!

Here's the details in brief
- On at The Cashmere Club this Thursday 1 Oct
- Doors open at 6pm
- Don't forget to bring a gold coin for the entry fee
- Cash is a good option to have on you but there will be eftpos available at some tables or direct payment
- Net proceeds go to Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue
- Raffle with fantastic prizes and drawn on the night at 7:45

I was awoken at 2:30 am on Sunday by a drumming on my roof and wondered if this rain might be our first wet winter warm up. A few hours later, my alarm pushed aside restless dreams and I rubbed my eyes open to a flickering view out the window of starry skies. A quick forecast check promised a bluebird day!
With spring’s longer days the sun was ready to crest the hills to the east as we left the Texas Flat car park at about 6:30 am. After a tour of the hog’s back we crossed the south branch of Tims Stream and busied ourselves with 300m of tussock climbing to make the rocky ridge and our first snow.
Our arrival at the ridge was overseen by a solitary Karearea. As we got close our silent sentinel flew further up the ridge to monitor our progress before descending to the bush in search of what we hoped might be a second breakfast. We relished the opportunity to leave the tussock behind and scramble up the rocky snow-clad ridge to the east face of the slope leading to point 1950 on the main range a few hundred metres North of Mt Cheeseman.
Our early start paid off as we found the snow above 1,700m was still firm enough to move faster with crampons on than kick steps, despite facing the morning sun. As we moved south along the ridge to the summit, we saw that a combination of wind and sun had stripped the snow on north and west facing slopes. A curious kea hopped on a rock to chat with us as we passed.
At the top we dug some sit-pits on the summit to eat lunch out of the wind.
The surface on the east face we descended had a thin crust of verglas on spring corn.
It was great to enjoy plenty of banter with male and female members from their early 20s to late 50s, from New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and France.

Climbing is on tonight, hopefully we’ll be outside from next week.
Dom will be at the adventure centre from about 18:30.
We’ve got a table booked at the moon underwater afterwards.
Come for a beer or a spice bag, it’s trickier to get to the pub once we head outside.

It was great to collaborate with Affinity Initiative Aotearoa for a weekend in the mountains.

Our newly elected section Chair, Natasha, teamed up with Freddie from Affinity Initiative Aotearoa (Affinity for short) to run the first Affinity alpine course in Aotearoa. They spent the weekend in Arthurs Pass teaching basic snowcraft skills including movement, survival, weather and trip planning.

Affinity is a community initiative working to increase diversity in outdoor spaces. They support people who identify as people of colour to get involved, build confidence and connections and develop a stronger sense of community.

It was a fantastic opportunity to bring people together, introduce participants to the alpine environment, build confidence and share the enjoyment of being in the mountains.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the weekend happen. A special thank you to Jim, Freddie and Nat for instructing throughout the weekend, and to our NZAC Health and Safety Officer, Gregg, for helping make it happen in the background. We’re proud to support opportunities that help more people experience and enjoy the outdoors.
