What a great weekend at Canterbury Champs last weeeknd. The R&Js did a great job as did all the volunteers. The announcers, certificate righters, time keepers, glove stewards, door staff and doctors all gave up there weekends to makesure the tournament ran smoothly.

Massive thanks to our officials!! With limited number of volunteers locally we are super grateful also to our officials travelling from Gore, Timaru, Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland and New Plymouth! Without you all The South Island Novice Championships would not have been possible. Thanks for your hard work helping officiate 96 bouts over two days! Holy there was some incredibly talent to!!

What better than to kick start the season with 95 bouts.

What an awesome weekend at the South Island Novice Championship, we are extremely grateful for our hosts Woolston Boxing Club for being very accomodating and putting another spectacular tournament. We are always privileged to officiate the fresh talent that the South Island offers. This year we witnessed what we believed to be some of the most impressive performances displayed by debuts and novices, many displaying very seasoned boxing ability. We congratulate all debutants, runner ups and novice champions, it takes a lot of bravery to don the red or blue and step inside the ring and many of you win or lose displayed plenty of that. The year ahead looks very bright on the horizon.

If you or someone you know is keen to get in the ring or sit ringside, but not in red or blue and instead in white and black, get touch with us, we always welcome helping hands.

As a group of R&Js the New Zealand Nationals is the pinnacle if NZ Amatuer Boxing. We are very proud to have 2 Christchurch based R&Js in Jarrod and Dayle selected for this year's NZ Boxing Nationals to be held in Christchurch. We also have 3 other SI based R&Js attending, John, Peter and Chris.
Good luck to everyone.

We would like to extend a big warm thank you to Papanui Boxing Club for offering an open seat to one of our RJs. It was a great and valued trip and a worth while experience sharing knowledge between regions and further strengthening the NZ RJ skill set. Papanui and riverside have great enthusiastic crews and should be proud of their performances win or lose.

A tough weekend at the office up at Auckland, thank you to Isaac, Paul and Trish and the Auckland Amateur Boxing Assoc - ABA for their hospitality and giving our fighters valuable experience and the opportunity to compete and participate in our fantastic sport.

An even bigger thank you goes to the One Foundation Limited for supporting our club and helping make these trips possible. We’d also like to take this chance to send our condolences to the One foundation Whanau and the family of Lyn Preston on her recent passing. The impact she has had on many communities is immeasurable.

In terms of results things didn’t go our way which wasn’t helped with most of our opponents missing weight.

William started us off and got off to a really good start looking the goods, before a perfectly placed body shot ended the bout.

Jonah was up next against a tricky southpaw, just needing more go forward to get the W.

Christian took on a massive challenge moving up to Light middleweight. Well actually middleweight after his opponent missed weight. Christian battled well and overcame a huge size disadvantage, going down on a split decision that could’ve easily gone our way. Well done Christian, your mana is huge and you showed that again today.

Riley came up against the North Island Golden glove champion and presumably the NZ no 1. Riley and Noah had a terrific fight with fierce body rips and beatiful power punching exchanged. Riley’s opponent got a deserved decision win, however Riley can take a lot out of the bout knowing he’s not far off being top dog.

Nikau finished up for us going up against a big weight disadvantage. Nikau boxed very well using a nice jab to find range with big right hands to be awarded a clear decision win.

🥊🏆 Important Announcement: Maintaining Sportsmanship at Boxing Tournaments 🏆🥊

Dear Boxing Community,

As we gear up for our upcoming boxing tournaments, we want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of maintaining sportsmanship at all times. Whether you're a coach, athlete, or spectator, your behaviour plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere of the event and reflecting the values of our sport.

For Coaches:
• Lead by example in the corner. Your athletes look to you for guidance and support, so maintain a positive and encouraging demeanour throughout the matches.
• Encourage fair play and respect for opponents, coaches, and officials. Remember that your actions set the tone for your athletes' behaviour.

For Athletes:
• Compete with honour and integrity, win or lose. Show respect for your opponents, coaches, and officials, and abide by the rules of the sport at all times.
• Display good sportsmanship both inside and outside the ring. Your conduct reflects not only on yourself but also on your club and the boxing community as a whole.

For Spectators:
• Cheer enthusiastically for your favourite athletes, but do so in a manner that is respectful and supportive. Avoid engaging in behaviour that could detract from the experience of others.
• Show appreciation for all athletes, regardless of the outcome of their matches. Let's celebrate the dedication and hard work of everyone who steps into the ring.

At our tournaments, we strive to create an environment that is inclusive, respectful, and welcoming to all members of the boxing community. By upholding the principles of sportsmanship, we can ensure that everyone has a positive and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. Let's make our upcoming tournaments a showcase of the best that boxing has to offer!

Best regards, The Canterbury Boxing Association
