DEREK SIGNS WITH TARANAKI
It is with great pleasure to announce that Canterbury Knights Co-Captain Derek Albertsen is set to join his home town Taranaki Mountain Airs for the 2020 NZ NBL season beginning in April. Derek has previously played with Taranaki for three seasons and taken court with the Otago Nuggets and Canterbury Rams. He will being plenty of leadership and contribute to the team culture immediately alongside his high quality on-court skills. Derek embodies the team-first ideal of "play for each other" and relates well to his team-mates to make the team perform better. His tactical knowledge is significant and he is a student of the game. Derek, 25, has been an influential player with the Canterbury Knights since 2016. He was the catalyst behind two Melbourne tours where the team took on semi-professional teams and produced a combined 9-2 record. Derek spearheaded the 2017 HoopNation title in Tauranga along with Co-Captain Marty Davison. The Knights will welcome him back following the NBL season. We wish Derek the best with Taranaki and we will all be cheering you on from down here. It is great to see great things happen to great people! And hopefully we can see a few more 4-point plays like this one.

Congrats to Canterbury Knights co-captain Marty Davison for taking the next step in his International refereeing journey. He refereed his first FIBA Qualifying match between Korea and Thailand in Seoul, South Korea. Marty refereed more Australian NBL matches this season and is on the NZ NBL panel for the upcoming season. All the best for your refereeing future and finding some time on the side to play with the Knights! You are a role model for all aspects of the game, on and off the court!

From Sharon:
Last game of the Melbourne tour tips off at 9pm NZT against the Sthn Peninsula Sharks. We are down to 7 players with Marty (departed the tour yesterday to get back home), and the purple guys (on account of the colour of their ankles) Derek and Joel injured. But this is a great chance for the young ones to step up. Here is the live stats feed and the livestream will be on Piet Van Hasselt FB page.

KNIGHTS FINISH MCKINNON INVITATIONAL SECOND
The Canterbury Knights completed the McKinnon Invitational Tournament in Melbourne with a 3-1 record against some strong teams from the Big V State Championship and NBL1 leagues. The team was without their emotional leader with Derek Albertsen forced to the sidelines after injuring his ankle the day prior at the end of a training session. This didn’t stop Derek from contributing as an assistant coach and helping the team succeed. The Knights finish up their trip on Tuesday night against the Southern Peninsula Sharks at 9pm NZ Time (Facebook Live and Livestats will be available). Full tour wrap coming up.
