That nagging pain on the outside of your hip? 👀

Maybe it hurts when you lie on that side, walk for longer, climb stairs or after a bigger day than usual.

When the hip is really irritable, jumping straight into lots of reps, big ranges of movement or heavy strengthening isn’t always the best place to start.

Sometimes we need to find a level of load your hip can tolerate first.

👉 That’s where an isometric can be useful.
With this seated hip abduction, you’re working the muscles around the outside of the hip without much movement.

It can be a simple way to start introducing load before progressing to bigger movements and heavier strengthening.

Because the goal isn’t to avoid using your hip.
It’s to gradually build a hip that can handle MORE. 💪
Save this one for later.

Exercise choice will depend on your individual presentation and isn’t a replacement for assessment if your pain is persistent or worsening.

Sciatica isn’t just one thing

There are two important nerve-related problems:
1️⃣Radicular pain = you gain symptoms

* Shooting, burning or electric pain
* Pins and needles
* Pain travelling down the leg

2️⃣ Radiculopathy = you lose function
* Reduced strength
* Reduced sensation or numbness
* Reduced reflexes

You can have one or both at the same time.
Why is this important for you to understand?

Because pain intensity doesn’t always tell us how well your nerve is functioning.

Severe leg pain can feel frightening without a loss of nerve function. On the other hand, weakness or reduced sensation may need closer monitoring even if your pain isn’t severe.

Understanding the difference helps you:
* Know what symptoms to watch for
* Explain changes clearly to your clinician
* Get the right assessment and treatment
* Feel less frightened by pain alone
That’s why we don’t only ask where it hurts. We also assess your strength, sensation and reflexes.

New here? 👋

We’re The Recovery Project a Cromwell-based (central otago nz) osteopathy, injury rehabilitation and strength training clinic.

We talk about back, hip and pelvic pain, persistent pain, injury rehab and building the strength you need for work, sport and everyday life.

We combine clinical care with proper, progressive exercise programming. That means assessing, treating, testing and gradually building your capacity not simply handing you a few rehab exercises and hoping for the best.

And you don’t need to live in Cromwell to work with us. We also offer personalised online programming for people further afield.

Dull, nagging pain that never settles? Here’s what might be going on.

In clinic think is often a tell tale sign to me that life load is too much. And it doesn’t just come from the gym or rehab.

Your body adds up everything you do. And when the total demand on your body is currently exceeding what it can comfortably tolerate and recover from it lets us know.

A busy day at work, lifting more than usual, sitting in one position, poor sleep, stress and your gym session all go into the same “load bucket”.

So, if work has suddenly become busier, it might not be the best week to also increase your gym weights, add more reps and train more often.

That doesn’t mean you need to stop. It means you need to balance things.

Try:

➡️Keeping your exercises the same while your body adapts to a busier workload

➡️Increasing only one thing at a time, such as weight, reps or sets

➡️Changing position and moving regularly during the day

➡️Slowing down instead of rushing through your rehab

➡️Breathing throughout each exercise rather than holding your breath and tensing everything

➡️Checking how you feel later that day and the next morning

➡️Prioritising sleep and recovery when life is stressful
Your rehab exercises aren’t just a checklist.

➡️Each session is a chance to practise moving with control, breathing normally and building confidence.

You don’t need to avoid load you need to manage it.
When work, exercise and life all increase at the same time, your body may simply need more time to catch up.
