A Dunedin icon worth stopping to see

You can’t really explore Dunedin without coming across the beautiful Dunedin Railway Station.

Often called the “Gingerbread House”, this grand building was opened in 1906 and is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Its striking Flemish Renaissance-style architecture, ornate details and colourful mosaic floors make it just as impressive inside as it is from the outside.

Once one of New Zealand’s busiest railway stations, it now stands as a reminder of Dunedin’s railway history and is still a much-loved part of the city.

Take a moment to wander through, admire the architecture and have a look at the stories held within one of Dunedin’s most photographed buildings. 📸

Housed in the former 1877 Post Office, the Port Chalmers Maritime Museum brings together fascinating stories, photographs and objects from the area’s maritime past, including shipping, fishing, Antarctic exploration and everyday life in Port Chalmers.

One of the highlights is the Wall of Ships, showcasing the vessels that have played a part in the port’s history. You can also visit the viewing gallery for a look over the working port and see the connection between Port Chalmers’ past and present. ⚓
