"You have not crossed the Plateau of Latent Potential" - Atomic Habits, James Clear
Such a powerful statement! In James's book, he talks about improving ourselves, a team, a project, etc, by 1% a day. This 1% has a compounding effect, and we do not see much difference when we start. The results seem to come out of nowhere later.
How many times have I started something not to see "progress" and throw it in? How often did I start going to the gym to not get immediate results and give in too easily? How many times have you started something to feel like you're making no progress and throw it in?
When we first start making a change, habit, new skill, or project, our 1% daily improvements are not noticeable. In my opinion, this is the hardest part: making a start and seeing very little change or improvement. The result-lacking start is what James calls the Plateau of Latent Potential. To enjoy the benefits of our labour, we want to choose to stick at our task long enough to get across the Plateau of Latent Potential ( I really like that name! )
"Simplicity on the Far Side of Complexity" - I don't know who touted this. Still, in my mind map, the simplicity on the far side of complexity is the compounding power of 1% improvements when we've persisted at something long enough to get across the Plateau of Latent Potential.
Stick at it and don't give up!

How often do you imagine life being better? How often do you tell yourself that life is the way it is and there's little you can do to change it?
Have you heard of the Reticular Activating System ( RAS )? This little part of the brain "filters" the billions of data bits we absorb every second. It is incredibly powerful and efficient at its job.
What does this system use to create the "filter" that permits the right data to our awareness? It uses our beliefs, values and what we choose to focus on. That filter removes almost all data that doesn't fit into those categories, exposing us to what we believe we know.
In the example used in the episode linked below, I buy a new car. I don't remember seeing the car much before. But now it's everywhere...
They've always been there, but now my filter has changed, and those "data bits" are allowed through. Suddenly, I feel like I see my new model of car everywhere.
I don't believe I can fast for 24 hours. I attempt anyway, and on the journey, I will only remember; I will only be aware of the evidence that confirms my belief until it becomes too much, and I give up. This is also known as confirmation bias.
We can influence and change our filter intentionally. We can literally choose to change our beliefs about something. We can also use repetition ( affirmations ) to help shift our beliefs. The importance of this is that our RAS will start letting the "data bits" through that back up that belief or value. We will start seeing what was always there but was being filtered out by our RAS. As the bits come in, our conviction will grow. It all starts with shifting our focus to positive outcomes, our beliefs about ourselves and situations, and what we value.
I think I'm not a good dad. I choose to believe that I am. I intentionally tell myself that I'm a good dad. I do another Saturday of parenting. At the end of the day, I notice that, ACTUALLY, there are things that make me a good parent. I make sure my kids are watered and fed. I teach them good values. There may even be a situation that I react differently to because I've decided that I'm a good dad. As an example, I don't raise my voice. We will have actions that can still be summed into "not good", too, but the important thing is we're starting to let good "data bits" through, and we can choose to focus on them. This is us manipulating our own RAS and its filter.
I cannot express how powerful this is.
It also explains why having a big, clear dream is ALWAYS the first step towards improving our lives.

What is happiness?
I'm really curious to get peoples' thoughts on this. We all strive for happiness and there is no "one size fits all". What is the closest "blanket" statement you can make, to happiness?
I've had different ideas about this over the years, including freedom, financial freedom, family and/or friends but I think the thing that is really starting to ring true to me, as I get older and uglier :D, is purpose!
I've had freedom of time. I was unemployed for six odd months. I wasn't happy. I've had moments where I was financially doing okay. I was most certainly happier, but I also had purpose then. But the times when I've felt the fire burning, I've truly felt great about life and about myself was when I had purpose.
It's not just purpose by itself, though. It was when I had purpose and took action towards that purpose. When I reached the end of the day, and I'd worked towards my purpose, my self-esteem, life satisfaction, confidence and happiness was really high.
There is a caveat which is an awareness that I didn't expect to feel happy all the time. Can we feel a purpose all the time, though? I believe we can. I am only now exploring this and so am open to discussion.

Do you have an idea of what you want? Are you uncertain about how to get it? Are you missing a trusted person who will listen so you can work through the idea aloud without judgment? Do you feel like you're ready to start building your dream, but you need a nudge from a trusted person?
Imagine having a safe place to verbalise your thoughts, flesh out your ideas, build your vision, bounce ideas and feel the burn inside, the deep hunger and drive to achieve what you think is just out of reach? If you've not felt the burn before, imagine having a vision that makes you fidgety and animated. Your mind is racing with ideas, and you want to move, take action, and take the next step towards your vision that you have only thought of as a daydream.
Mental health awareness is rising, which is awesome. A lot more people have family and friends they can talk to. Many people are still missing the support of a person who'll help them find the next step towards their dream.
Today, we rarely have a safe person or community that permits us to dream. Or maybe you have joined some groups that post about building your dream but don't have a person directly in your life you can talk to. When we work together, you will have permission to dream, and we will explore without judgment what you're hungry for. Do you want to lose weight? You can do that! Do you want to build a better relationship with your partner? You can do that! Do you want to start a business? You can do that! Transformation does not happen overnight but through small steps every day. We will explore who you are and realise the small steps you can take to climb your mountain.
Over the last few years, I've undergone several transformations, including losing weight, transforming my masculinity, and becoming a better parent. I also positively changed how I show up as a partner when I'm in a relationship. I am currently working towards building my own business. I share this to inform you that I've undertaken several transformations and am continuing to transform myself. I deeply desire to create a safe environment for you to achieve yours, too!
I mentioned above that I'm building a business. That business is transformational coaching. I am looking to collaborate with people and build your dream into achievable steps, nudging you when appropriate and providing a non-judgemental environment of growth and possibility. The collaboration is for five weeks, one session a week, without exchanging money. I aim to bring you true wealth. True wealth being clarity and purpose and more excitement for your life.
