These tiny initials sparked a detective story. Instead of identifying the wearer, the J.B. mark may point to the maker, potentially connecting the shoes to the Hanover Street footwear business Frames Footwear founded in 1884.

Are you a senior high school student or university student in Canterbury who's thinking about a career in heritage? Or do you know someone who is? If so, we have just the event for you!
Careers in Heritage is annual event that provides students with an opportunity to learn more about a variety of careers in heritage. This year's speakers include curators, communicators, marketers, an historian and even an archaeologist! Each speaker talks for about 10 minutes about what their job involves, and how they got there. There's a chance for the students to ask questions, and to try out some networking over afternoon tea.
The event is being held at Tūranga on 4 August 2026, at 3:30pm. It's free to attend, but registration is required: https://events.humanitix.com/careers-in-heritage-2026
If you can't make it along, videos of past talks can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/
The event is organised by University of Canterbury with collaborators from the Department of Conservation, Christchurch City Council, Selwyn Libraries and Christchurch Archaeology Project.
