We uncovered a section of Victorian paving beneath the street. We did not expect to uncover the country's collective obsession with historic paving stones.

While this particular example is from Dunedin, we showcase archaeological finds from sites around the country.

Archaeological update: the pavers are doing well and have adjusted to fame remarkably quickly. An interview is taking place and you can read more in the Otago Daily Times later this week.

Modern paving: removed.
Victorian paving: 'Surprise, I'm still here.'

Are you a senior high school student or university student in Canterbury who's thinking about a career in heritage? Or do you know someone who is? If so, we have just the event for you!

Careers in Heritage is annual event that provides students with an opportunity to learn more about a variety of careers in heritage. This year's speakers include curators, communicators, marketers, an historian and even an archaeologist! Each speaker talks for about 10 minutes about what their job involves, and how they got there. There's a chance for the students to ask questions, and to try out some networking over afternoon tea.

The event is being held at Tūranga on 4 August 2026, at 3:30pm. It's free to attend, but registration is required: https://events.humanitix.com/careers-in-heritage-2026
