Founded in June 1878, OUDS provides a forum for students of UoO to debate and discuss

Whether it's debating at the Business building, competing in national and international tournaments, drinking at local bars or attending BYOs, we can guarantee there's something for everyone at the society. Founded in June 1878, the Otago University Debating Society (OUDS) is the oldest student organisation at the University of Otago. We host regular events to promote debating at both the University of Otago and schools in the Otago region, and compete at national and international tournaments. We cater to novice debaters and seasoned veterans alike, with plenty of opportunity to learn from some of the best debaters in New Zealand and to take part in a variety of debating events. As well as the chance to develop strong debating skills, OUDS also offers an extremely friendly environment in which you can get to know a variety of people and enjoy a wide range of social events.

This break, OUDS travelled to the mighty Canterbury for Officers Cup 2026, and were so proud to share that Otago made the grand final for the second year in row! 🏆

We sent 6 teams and 5 judges to compete over three days, where both Otago 1 broke 2nd and Otago 2 sat within break contention! ✨

Otago 1 faced Victoria 2 in the semis, winning on a 4-1 split to earn their place in the grand final 🔥 They then took A2 in finals. And while we may not have come away with the win, making finals back-to-back at Officers is a huge achievement for Otago, and we couldn’t be prouder!

A huge thank you to every debater and judge who made the the trip, and congratulations to Auckland 2 on the win, and to all the teams and judges who broke, congrats! 💛💙

It’s time for our third BYO! ⭐️ This time we’re headed to La Porchetta. Come along and show up at 6:30pm this weekend, you don’t need to RSVP. ✨

Please note that per DCC Bylaws you do have to purchase food, there’s a small corkage fee, and you have to share a bottle of w**e between two people. Come along and enjoy the company of some great friends! There’s no obligation, nor expectation for you to drink 😊
